The Posterous iPhone app is out! PicPosterous takes away all the pain from sharing photo sets and video online

The new Posterous iPhone app removes all the friction with posting photos and video online. PicPosterous is designed to be a replacement for the Camera app on your phone, posting photo sets and video to your Posterous site *live, as you take them*.

After taking your first photo at an event, create a new album and name it something, say "Glass blowing in SF". That post will be created online and the first photo you selected will be added. Now, throughout the day, continue taking photos or video. Each photo you take can be added to the album you created earlier, creating an image gallery on your site.

When you are done with that event and ready to go home, there's nothing more to do! Your photos and video are already online. And in typical Posterous style, you don't need an account to use the app, posts include location information with Google Maps, we'll autopost to your other services, and email your posts to your subscribers.

At Posterous, we believe in making posting easier. And PicPosterous is just another way to get photos and video on your site quickly. Instead of having to wait until the end of an event to post a set of images, let them post live as you take them.

PicPosterous is available in the iTunes App Store now. Click here to download it.

You can find more information about PicPosterous on our new PicPosterous help site.

I LOVE posterous and use it multiple times a day to update my personal blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts. I have been checking multiple times a day for the app to be released over the past 2 weeks.

I also tout the great features of posterous on our weekly live video tech show at corndogcomputers.com

Now that I've checked out the app....

BIG disappointment!

While some of the new features you have included in the app are nice, how can you forget adding text to the photo and video uploads? With such a fundamental feature missing I am going to have to stick to updating by email.

I really hope you get this feature added soon in a future release.

Aug 20, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
Robert, you can add text. That's the album name. Make it whatever you want, and that becomes the title on the post. It also gets tweeted out.

I'll probably rename that "title" since it's causing confusion. Thanks!

Sachin,

Ok, that does help some... But while I can add a title to the photo / video I am still not able to include any description like I can while updating via email.

I was also hoping that the app would allow me to do text only updates as well.

Thanks again, looking forward to the updates.

Aug 20, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
sure, i can add a "body" field to the app as well. usually i dont want to be bothered with adding more text, i just want my photos uploaded.

But i'll add that, it's easy :)

Robert Basil said...
Plus I am not able to update just one area (blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc...) with the app like I can via email. It's all or nothing.

The app is a great start, but what's disappointing is it seems like it's a step back from the email updating and not a step forward like I had hoped. The new features are nice, but I would have rather have had all of the normal features that we have when we update via email before you added new ones.

Aug 20, 2009
I like the app a lot but I agree with Robert here, an optional "body" field to add a caption to your picture would be great.

Robert: well, no features are removed and you can still use the camera + mail combination straight from your iPhone and it still works extremely well... The app simply serves a slightly different use case right now.

The strength of Posterous comes from its email once, post everywhere philosophy... The app is only a cherry on cake to better serve the needs of "live" updaters right now :-)

James Aguilar said...
If the "as you take them" uploading works the way the app description seems to imply, it could be a game changer. For example, there will now be no way for police to stop protestors from sharing the things that happen at a protest. "Want to delete my film? Sorry, bud, it's already on the interblag." Nice.
Aug 20, 2009
Very, VERY cool. It appears though that there are some kinks associated with the image rotation when taking landscape photos.

Posterous makes me happy.

Agree with those wanting a body field. Also, it did not autopost for me. Perhaps that should be an option as well, I may not want it to autopost on 1st image. Allow me to select where and when?
Aug 20, 2009
Brian Hansen said...
I agree with Robert above who mentioned the need for body text. I'm also unclear about when its posted everywhere else. I wouldnt want to tweet with the first picture when I wasn't done with the event yet. I like the idea of being able to add pics to an album. But I dont like the idea of not being able to control when the tweet goes out. Sounds like you guys are also working on the rotation thing as well, cool.

It's also kind of weird that this app is so centered around the pictures. Pictures are a big part but I dont really see what the advantage is over email. I think I'm just going to stick with email for now it seems.

All that said, I still love Posterous and it's obvious your momentum isnt stopping anytime soon.

Great job Sachin and Gary and crew !!

Nice app, but not what I was expecting (was hoping for a Tumblr style app with optimized views of my Posterous for iPhone format and a quick "make a post" interface all in one). Was also hoping for text posts and not sure why it has to post the pictures to a new Posterous stream/URL and not to my own Posterous stream. Am I missing something?

B Flat: yeah, I wanted to do something different with this app, not just another blogging program. The idea here is to make photo uploads to posts automatic, kill the explicit "ok, now i have to post"

Aug 20, 2009
Judd said...
Developer expectations and user expectations are two different things...especially in this case. Some of the reactions/comments/feedback typify this.

The app focuses on very simple photo uploading with a unique "live updating" feature to particular albums (it's called "Pic"Posterous, right!)

This solves a "photo problem" and is not what users "expected"...an app to augment the already cool/simple process of posting to your blog. Yes, pictures tell stories...but writers/bloggers want to write a bit of story to give them more context.

The good thing is that the app is cool and the feedback & suggestions will only help shape this into another unique tool that challenges the conventional way of doing things. This is the web...changes made on the fly (and you guy move fast!)

S&G, the open communication you have established is great...people are talking and you listen. Because you make things simple, people are engaged and the "what we" & "how we" post is more inspiring/useful to us and hopefully to followers. The openness here can only help you guys do what you are doing very well...even better.

Make a few adjustments in V.2 to keep the simple edict and allow more control and more coolness.

My wish list: body text, autopost control as with email (this is so unique that it HAS to be in there), get the simple yellow box branding on the app and a way to notify that the album/post has been updated with more pics.

Thanks. @judd6149

Sachin Agarwal said...
Jeff, I couldn't disable the trimming option in the app. It's an Apple bug, will be fixed in an iPhone update

Judd, thanks for your comments. Totally agree. I designed the app to do one thing, post photos from events live. It's not a general purpose Posterous app (as you noted, it's not even called "Posterous"). When you use the app for what it was designed to do, it's pretty great

Yaniel, we're experiencing a backlog on autopost. Sorry about that.

Great work though Sachin... I am very impressed with the design and how it is all layed out... rate it a 9/10... just get that trimming video taken out and I am 10/10

It seems to lag when autoposting... also, I am also confused about the "album" thing (when do the pictures actually get sent to posterous)... maybe a youtube video walkthrew?

Sachin, Just started using your site and am blown away so far! Been trying to find a clean way to post to multiple locations for our business and think what you guys have created in great!

Like the iPhone app, but wish it was more robust. Would love a separate space for tagging as some of our users are a bit tech scared. I would also like the ability to add text to images as well, but one other request for the app would be the ability to attach an audio file along with an image or an album. Similar to audioboo

I have been doing this by creating an audio file, then act as if I am going to email it, copy the file, open pictures, pick the album, go to email that and then paste the audio file. It is a bit cumbersome...

Perhaps I am doing it wrong, but if not having a clean way to add audio files alongside images in the app would be amazing and would truly make posterous a total solution for us... then again, I may be alone in this request :)

Like the option to create an album instead of just individual photos. Had a couple of problems tho.

1) added a photo twice by mistake and could not figure out how to delete it from the album on iPhone OR on posterous.
2) tried to delete a photo from the album on Posterous but it deleted the WHOLE album! Can't figure out how to get it back online.
3) tried to add the album to another of my Posterous sites but could not get it to go there either after signing in with the other email.

I'm confused about what to do now--don't want to add those 17 or so photos to an album again. And still several more to go.

Agree with those who want to add captions to photos as an option. These are pics from SLCC09 and I need to identify the people in each shot for other attendees. Without that it's useless.

Posterous I added the album to first:
http://ldorland.posterous.com
Place I tried to add it later while adding more photos:

Sachin,

Is it just me or has the normal "updating via email" been VERY slow over the past week since this app was released? Some updates are completed in a few minutes like normal, and some take 30 minutes or more. Keep in mind these are only text updates. It's not only taking them a long time to be sent to Twitter, Facebook and my WP blog... but they are also taking an abnormal amount of time to make it to my Posterous blog and for me to get a response back (via email) from Posterous that my update has been received.

Has the release of the iPhone app overloaded the servers?

Aug 24, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
Hey Robert. We're just experiencing a lot of load for a number of reasons right. For the most part, posting should be near instant. But for example, right now in particular we are are a bit behind on email posts.

Guys - this is great - but only autoposts the first photo to Flickr, not the rest. This is very frustrating.

Dave, in PicPosterous on the New Album screen, tap on the site name. You will get a picker with all the sites you own or contribute to

I am having the same problem as Scott. Only the first image in my album gets posted anywhere. Am I missing a setting somewhere Sachin?

@Sachin So, only posting the first image to Facebook and Flickr is the way the app works for now? It doesn't continually add the images to those other albums?

I really like this app a lot. My only deterrent to using it more often is that you are unable to take many pics in quick succession since it is uploading instantly and the camera doesn't open up again fast enough to 'catch' the experience in pictures as it is flying by. I think if there were a tab option that allowed to post the album once all the pics were taken rather than one by one it would be more attractive in situations where 'time is of the essence' in capturing a moment. (Camera is 'slower' b/c the processor is occupied with uploading the photo(s) as they are being taken.) Unfortunately (or fortunately) as it is w/ the new OS and the domestic mail app being more capable (I have sent up to 15 photos at one time w/ it) I have reverted to using this more out of the time consideration. Even if you take all the photos w/ the iPhone dom. camera app, but then use PicPosterous to post them it still takes a long time as the app sends you back to your photo library to pick each one rather than letting you choose a string, then uploading. I do like the app though, very sleek and smooth--very Apple-ish. This is just a little feedback.

Great app! 2 thoughts. 1: Make this avail for iPod Touch users. 2: Attempt to port this to windows mobile. :D

Please don't add other options! I already have to press too many buttons to send a photo online. It's nice, but it needs streamlining. I don't like being asked every time if I want to post to the last gallery. That's what I want to do 99% of the time! Why ask me?

I agree – I really wanted to do a couple of live posts from the NY marathon, but it was just too fiddly. I used a Blackberry with the “Send to Facebook” menu option – much, much simpler.<o:p></o:p>
