The Official Posterous Posterous

This is where we post about new features on posterous. You can get a blog just like this by emailing post@posterous.com.
« Back to blog

The new Posterous bookmarklet lets you grab photos, video, and text right out of the page you're already on!

The Posterous bookmarklet is a special bookmark that lets you quickly grab content out of the page you're on. You can click and drag to select text and click "Share on Posterous" in your bookmark bar, and you'll get the Posterous bookmarklet window that will let you edit text, add a comment, and choose which site to post to. Just click the bookmark on its own and it will auto-detect all large photos, video and media on the page, even from your friends blogs or posterii.

If you use it in conjunction with Autopost, suddenly the bookmarklet becomes a universal bookmarklet that you can use to post to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and any other blog that Posterous supports.

Click here to install it and start posting right away.

Cool stuff. How do you delete an excerpt if it's found two and you only want one of them?

You guys are great. Keep up the good additions. REQUEST: In the bookmarklet "Advanced Options", can we have the tagging tool please?
Feb 04, 2009
Garry Tan said...
rjp -- You don't have to delete excerpts. It only chooses the one that you have shown at the moment.

Kate -- coming soon. =)

Nice move. This is what I needed to start using Posterous more often. It's what I'm already doing on other services, and it's easier than Email for mel. Congratulations!

You know how folks have these little pet features they want, and no matter how cool the new stuff is, they still ask, "That's great, but where's _____?" Mine are customization/themes and the ability to use Disqus for comments :-)

I tried to add the posterous bookmarklet but it says I need to upgrade to IE7 because I have IE6. Thing is I don't have IE6. I have had IE7 for a while now. How can I do this?

Amazing. Posterous is becoming my blogging platform of choice. By the way, would it be possible to add a "Reblog" option?

Reblog / repost is coming soon too-- it's the natural complement to the bookmarklet.

Holy Kaw! (to quote Guy Kawasaki) this is extremely cool!
Tumblr? never used it, never will :-)

@Willem Van Bogaert: the Evernote bookmarklet is slightly more advanced in some aspects (includes tagging)

Right now as a temporary solution, you can tag in the bookmarklet by adding tags in the title of the post, just as you would in an email.

Just use ((tags:tag1, tag2))

A "universal bookmarklet"--now that's something I have been waiting for for a long time. Can't wait to try this when it works in Opera!

You guys totally rock. I sent in a request for this about 1.5 months back, and you said it would be there soon. Props for moving so fast.

You just took a big step forward, now on to skins/themes... once you have those solved, you'll officially be ahead of Tumblr due to Posterous' great forwarding capabilities.

Addendum: Can we please have WYSIWIG editing in the bookmarklet's excerpt field soon? (Check out Wordpress' "Press This" for a solution)

What Nik said. I'm not that keen on someone taking umbrage at a direct image link on my posterous and replacing it with goatse.

Also, also, sometimes I want to capture a snapshot of a flash widget (to highlight something amusing) rather than embed the actual widget (with changing content that I have no control over.) Don't know if this is something the bookmarklet can do or if it's still a job for screenshotting?

If I use the bookmarklet, I get "this video is no longer available". If I use YouTube's embed code, it works fine. Difference between the two in the pasty.

I have a problem with the autopost via bookmarklet. My twitter status is not getting updated when ever i do a post via this
Feb 13, 2009
A problem that I've been having is the ability to choose where my posts go to. Right now, it just posts everywhere and will not allow me to select services.
Feb 13, 2009
Garry Tan said...
We'll add that as an option soon. Until then, you can deselect it from the advanced options and then manually post it from the post page itself, by clicking "Post elsewhere" in the right column.

I just can't get it to work with a collage of text and the picture that's published with it. The bookmarklet grabs the text, but misses the picture. When I go to my posterous, what I see is the text and the bare name of the picture file.

Does anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong? Does anyone have the same problem?

I'm new to Posterous, but have managed to add the bookmarklet to my free toolbar. If anyone is struggling to add the bookmarklet to their favourites, why not consider my toolbar?

I'm running into problems using it with FF3.0.11. I get a request for a popup from the site I'm browsing, a new tab with the posterous snippet, and an overlaid unstyled box on the original tab with some "" HTML.

Do I need to update the bookmarklet, downgrade my FF, or something entirely different to both?

a) make sure third party cookies are enabled, or make an exception for posterous.com
b) disable or make an exception for our bookmarklet if you use any sort of js / noscript / blocker plugin.
