Posterous Tip: Turn Posterous tags into autoposted Twitter #hashtags

We all know that Posterous is the easiest way to share photos and videos with your friends on Twitter. Now, we've just added a new feature that turns tags on Posterous into #hashtags when you autopost to Twitter or any other microblog.

For instance:

Subject: It really does smell like teen spirit ((tag: grunge, nirvana))

becomes:

To enable this feature, just edit the "Advanced Settings" of your Twitter autopost site by visiting the autopost page and add "{{hash_tags}}" to your custom footer:

New! Auto-expanding embeds for Lala.com, Viddler, and Google Video

Works great with both the bookmarklet and by pasting the link to songs, albums, and videos directly from those services.

Lala has thousands of songs that are easily embeddable into your blog just by pasting the URL to the album or song.

For instance, just paste the URL into its own line in your post:

And get this!

Viddler and Google Video hosted videos are now supported as auto-expanding site URLS as well. Just paste the URL and go. No need for an embed code.

New Feature: Use Feedburner to track your feed

We made it really easy to use Feedburner to get analytics about who's reading your feed. Just burn your Posterous RSS feed and add the new Feedburner feed address to your site and you're off.

Grab the address from Feedburner:

Then add it to your site settings:

The next time you go to your site the feed icon will link to your Feedburner feed! You can find more setup instruction in our help section.

Send to Posterous directly from Google Reader

Update: We've been added as an official site, so now it's even easier! You don't have to do the stuff below anymore.

--

We're big fans of Google Reader. It's one of the easiest ways to view everyone's stuff fast. Yesterday, Google Reader added a new Send To feature that lets you post to your favorite places right from Google Reader while you're looking at stuff.

By popular demand, now you can use this new Send To feature with Posterous. Go to Settings > Send To in Google Reader and under "Don't see your favorite site?" click Create Custom Link.

Then copy and paste the values below into the custom link fields:

Name
URL
Icon URL

It should look like this:

Click Save and you're done.

Now when browsing Google Reader, you'll see a "Send To" option for Posterous at the bottom of each reader entry like so:

When you click Posterous, you'll be sent to our "Share on Posterous" page that works like our Bookmarklet. We've also revamped the way the bookmarklet handles text posts so if you don't select any text on a page, we'll still try to extract the meatiest part of the content of a page.

Of course, you can always still just click "Email" to post@posterous.com, and that will still work just great too.

Feel free to email us at help@posterous.com if you run into any problems.

Posterous works awesome with Google Maps

Embedding a Google Map in one of your posts could not be simpler. Just grab the map link from Google Maps and drop it on its own line into your email or our web based post editor. We'll expand it into an interactive map for you.

So if I wanted to show people where I've been staying lately I paste this link into my post:

And I get a map like this:

What's more, Posterous is now taking advantage off all the location data that you're sending us encoded in your images. So when I add the following image to my post:

Posterous looks up the the geocoordinates encoded in it and displays the name of the place with a link that expands into a map. Check out the bottom of this post just above the comments to see where the photo was taken. If you really don't want everyone knowing where you've been taking pictures you can turn this off on your site's settings page. (Note: this is turned off for all sites that were created before this post was posted, so if you have an existing site you'll need to go to your site settings to turn this on).

I'm Brett, by the way, and I'm new here. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

Posterous launches super easy Twitter commenting and 2-click Twitter login

Isn't it about time you set up Posterous to autopost to Twitter? Now your readers can leave comments for you and tweet back through Twitter using our new commenting system. It's easier than ever for people to get involved and have a conversation on your blog.

Posterous now also fully supports Twitter's oAuth API for both Posterous users setting up autopost AND your readers who might want to tweet back right from your Posterous blog. For users who are already logged into Twitter, it's a trivial 2 clicks to get connected with Twitter. Click Allow and you're all set.

For users who were using the old way (by giving us your twitter login) -- things will still work just fine and you don't have to lift a finger. But if you'd like, you can delete your old Twitter autopost account at http://posterous.com/autopost and create a new one again. If you happen to change your Twitter password, you'll want to do this too.

In addition to Twitter, Facebook users can easily comment and share back using Facebook Connect. Twitter/Facebook commenters can also now enter their email address to sign up for comment updates.

As always, email us at help@posterous.com if you're having problems getting things working, and we'll get right back to you ASAP. Thanks for using posterous!

A new way to share your Posterous on your other blogs and sites: The Posterous Blog Widget

People use Posterous in a ton of different ways. Some like to autopost directly to their blogs on Wordpress or elsewhere. We're great for that -- we bring posting rich media by email to your existing blogs and online services.

Others, like Guy Kawasaki use us for all things bigger than a tweet but smaller than a blogpost, separate from their existing blogs on Typepad, Wordpress, or elsewhere. For those users, now you can share the stuff you post to Posterous on your own blog too, with the new Posterous Blog Widget by WidgetBox. Just get the embed code and drop it into your existing blog or website sidebar, and you're set.

Here's an example of what the Official Posterous Posterous would look like using the Widgetbox widget:

See our Ways to Share page in Help to customize and get installation instructions for your site.

Posterous launches Facebook Connect for login/signup and blog comments

You can now login to your Posterous using Facebook account, so it's easier than ever to get started or get rolling. If you haven't linked your Facebook to your Posterous account yet, you can do so by clicking Autopost to Everywhere and clicking Add a Service, and then "Enable autopost".

Anyone can now comment on any Posterous blog using Facebook too. We also make it super easy to post blog comments back to your Facebook wall -- just click "Post comment to Facebook" at the bottom of the comment form. (Custom domains don't work yet, but we've got requests out to Facebook to figure out how to support it.)

Posterous and Facebook, better together. Thanks for using posterous, and contact us at help@posterous.com anytime if you have suggestions, problems or ideas.

The new Posterous bookmarklet lets you grab photos, video, and text right out of the page you're already on!

The Posterous bookmarklet is a special bookmark that lets you quickly grab content out of the page you're on. You can click and drag to select text and click "Share on Posterous" in your bookmark bar, and you'll get the Posterous bookmarklet window that will let you edit text, add a comment, and choose which site to post to. Just click the bookmark on its own and it will auto-detect all large photos, video and media on the page, even from your friends blogs or posterii.

If you use it in conjunction with Autopost, suddenly the bookmarklet becomes a universal bookmarklet that you can use to post to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and any other blog that Posterous supports.

Click here to install it and start posting right away.
