Public group sites with post by moderation

Last month we rolled out group sites, the easiest way to have multiple contributors on a single blog. Just add contributors by email address, no accounts needed.

Today we take that a step further by allowing you to create public blogs that *anyone* can post to by email. Just turn on the "post by moderation" option in your site settings, then anyone can email post@sitename.posterous.com. This is a great way to create a group site or public forum.

Some examples:
Share recipes and cooking tips at Posterous Recipes by emailing post@recipes.posterous.com
Car talk? Apple talk? Email post@cars.posterous.com or post@apple.posterous.com

Create your own public Posterous site now!

Where do I see a list of all public group sites?

You can't see a list of all sites that allow post by moderation. We're leaving it up to site owners to promote their sites since each might want the scope of their site to be different.

One person might set up dogs.posterous.com for anyone in the world to chat about dogs. But someone else might setup davesbirthday.posterous.com so that all attendees to an event can post photos to a single place.

Great, I tried a wee post to the Posterous Recipes blog and when it showed up posterous seems to have figured out and pointed to my posterous blog and used my profile pic, maximum effect for minimum effort on my part.

Group sites and adding contributors is a great feature. I am just wondering some points. How can a contributor, who does not have an own posterous, add her picture and name on the site? All the password things in the email are pointing to an own posterous with URL etc. Is it also on purpose that this kind of "email only" contributors don't have their name shown on the main posterous page alonside with their posts? Thanks!

Contributors can add their own pictures and names quite easily by signing up for an account.

We can't give out personal information unless the user opts in, so that's why we only show "posted by email" for those users until they sign up for an account.

Fair enough, thanks. BTW, if the same "posted by email" post is shown on the My Posterous page, the email addresses or rather the names are shown. Can be it is only for me as the owner of that posterous, don't know.

is there any way of emailing the moderator each time something lands for moderating? Otherwise I need to keep checking the panel to see if there's anything awaiting moderation... Thanks

My mistake - sorry. The email was going to a different email address to the one I was posting from. User error - all sorted now. Thanks

I'd really like to see the email a post came from in the moderation area. I was going to use posterous for a photo competition but without this feature I can't. :(

Couldn't a moderator in a group blog assign a nickname to an email-only contributor so that "Posted by email" can instead read "Posted by Nick Name" if Nick Name is the owner of nick.name@nicknamesemail.com and contributes from that email address? Forcing people to create accounts to do anything (getting credit for posting in this case) beats the point of posterous!

Akka, thanks for the suggestion. we'll look into that. But creating an account takes about 10 seconds, and then offers a login where contributors can edit posts online and do much more.

I know. It is hard to understand, but I do have people who are deterred by those 10 seconds. Maybe because they have to stop what they are doing and create an account, maybe because they because are non-techies intimidated by another account...
On the other hand, because all one has to do to post is to compose an email to an account I provide them, all this is a non-issue. However, without proper credits, having many people contributing to a chain of thought becomes far less valuable.
