Posterous works awesome with Google Maps

Embedding a Google Map in one of your posts could not be simpler. Just grab the map link from Google Maps and drop it on its own line into your email or our web based post editor. We'll expand it into an interactive map for you.

So if I wanted to show people where I've been staying lately I paste this link into my post:

And I get a map like this:

What's more, Posterous is now taking advantage off all the location data that you're sending us encoded in your images. So when I add the following image to my post:

Posterous looks up the the geocoordinates encoded in it and displays the name of the place with a link that expands into a map. Check out the bottom of this post just above the comments to see where the photo was taken. If you really don't want everyone knowing where you've been taking pictures you can turn this off on your site's settings page. (Note: this is turned off for all sites that were created before this post was posted, so if you have an existing site you'll need to go to your site settings to turn this on).

I'm Brett, by the way, and I'm new here. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

Welcome, Brett! It's great to see the Posterous family growing. I've been asking for this feature and am really excited to see it live now. With the amount of position information flowing into all kinds of media (photos, videos), this is a perfect addition for Posterous. Congrats!

Not bad....

But why does this seem like a harder manual way to show where my iPhone 3GS photos were taken... aren't they automatically geotagged?

I hope soon posterous will have the "geotagging" with the iphone done right... until then this will do.

Jeff, you are such a hard one to please. Yes, it works automatically now with photos taken on the iphone. you don't need to do anything special

@Garry

Sorry about that... just noticed that. Not bad... I kinda like how it can be hidden and shown and the slide down... not bad at all. Why is it soo zoomed out though?

Good work boys!

@Sachin

Tough Love... lol

Very nice though... very nice... much better then some lame box on the side of the site. You guys built it into the blog very very well...

-- Would be cool if you guys can make the manual way to look like the iPhone way... a nice drop down rather then that huge map box... so I can edit and add it for my vids.

;-)

Nice! So what would it take to embed maps from http://www.bikemap.net? This site also uses Google Maps but the nice feature is that you dan display GPS tracks. See this for an example: http://www.bikemap.net/route/224542 . They do provide html snippets for embedding.

@brett thanks a lot. i give it a try. does it apply to images sent in the same post-mail (like 2 images and a ggogle maps link) or only with images that contain geo tagging information (from a gps camera or as hand edited image information)?

In order to help Google reduce their overall development costs whilst we use their geotargetting software, it wouldn't be a bad idea to offer to print these locations onto a postcard, a website header, a letterhead or anything the marketing people at Labnol can come up with. It would be one surefire way to allow the user to capture their images and Google could incorporate Scribd to offer it back to them as a digital masterpiece. Embed their images into a (Private Label Rights PDF File) so users can then use their own content when writing about specific interests and selling their finished product with or without a Google watermark based upon preference by the user.

I activated this option i my settings.
I sent a (plain text) mail with map URL (no embed code just the Link from a g maps) and attached JPEG to my posterous account.
But map and Jpg appear in a row not interactive.
what am i doing wrong?
Jul 14, 2009
brett gibson said...
@blogdrop That image doesn't have any geodata encoded in it. And the map embedded in your page is interactive. We don't merge arbitrary images and maps.

@brett now that i understood this feature ... next one: as you have custom themes at http://slinkset.com (and I have spotted my first individual skinned posterous blog today) ... (and Garry spoke of alpha testing) : is there a deadline (or: come-alife-line) for posterous themes???

Automatic maps from geo tagged photograph uploads is a very nice feature for my photograph blog of the beautiful shots in Itaga, Japan around Nikko, Japan :-)

Nice work adding geotagging tied to maps, even nicer, adding it the right way, as an option AND turned off for existing accounts by default. Great feature, but you don't always want to tell the entire world where a photo was taken. Big kudos on implementing a new feature, and implementing it well!

Tal - glad you got it fixed.

Michael - That's a good one. If you click on the embed link on that map page, it actually says "This map cannot be embedded", so even if we do expand it, it doesn't work right. I'll look into what we can do about this.

Unfortunately when iPhone apps use the built in camera or photo picker, they don't get geo location in the image! It's super annoying, but an issue on the iPhone itself. We're looking for ways around this.

I love the way you have implemented the google maps display for geocoded pictures, really well done! For myself, Flickr is still better because when I email a picture to my Flickr photostream (such as a picture from my camera that has NOT already been geocoded), I can include tags in the subject or body of the email (like Posterous can do) and Flickr reads geotags (Tags: geotagged geo:lat=xx.123456 geo:lon=yyy.123456) and automatically geotags the image (which Posterous can't do).

Using a far better printing application rather than Microsoft's dreary format, typically I use doPDF v6 which allows you to create a file created as a P.D.F.

You will have advertising embedded courtesy of Google Maps but that's fine, more importantly, you will have direct access to the printed digital photo subject that you've just printed which will help you utilize your prized snapshot in whichever manner you choose to use it.

Perhaps this is another way, I'm sure Google will 'LUV' you for it no matter how you apply the sciences.

wow. the option to enable this feature for pre-existing sites isn't easy to find. it's a good 3 or 4 clicks deep in the settings...
Aug 26, 2009
frank burns said...
Another thing the developers of this site could do is to create their very own Billboard where a collection of advertising images could be displayed with embedded links direct to the business. This would enable everyone that needs to find a local business much more easily as there are countless numbers of families in America and elsewhere placed who live down in country areas and have little to no exposure of the business directories.
Additional to this, you may be rewarded by the individual company that takes notice of your advertising Billboard and perhaps offers to pay you for advertising in a unique way over the usual standard forms of advertising. You will also be creating massive exposure for Google and they will be happy about that.

Hi,

Pasted the map URL in test post, (exactly as shown above).

Result:
A - in Firefox 3.0.13 (XP /SP2), as a normal web page :
==> Google map shows OK
B - in iPhone or other mob devices:
==> Google map does NOT show at all...
(using: mofuse.com or Mippin to convert to mobile)

see mobile test here:
http://test99.mofuse.mobi/

Do you see the embedded Google Map of the test post,
in your iPhone or other mobile device?

Thks!

calintel, mofuse strips the javascript which runs the google maps, so you won't see it, it's gone!! A Google static map would work on your page, but still fails in rss feeds etc (due to API keys vs referrer)!
Aug 28, 2009
test99 said...
Thanks f/the quick reply, Chris!
I see..also tried it with _Mippin.com_ w/no success,
(I guess the Mippin "mobilizer" also strips the JS).

Do you know of any example of a Google Map in a Posterous post,
which WOULD show in a mobile phone? (iPhone, etc)...

thanks!

Follow up...I can now see my post WITH the Google Map,
in my iPhone - but the left margin of the Post is to wide...
Is there a way to make Posterous "auto-detect" that it's beein viewed by a mobile device? iPhone, Android G1, etc?

Thanks!

No (not that I know off). I think the date string causes the extra left margin.. Iphone and blackberry seem to both handle JS (and maps) pretty well but I'm not sure what other mobile platforms you are interested in or how they will "react". Remember a rss feed can be consumed everywhere!!

Would it be possible to implement some sort of Location Tag? I love the idea of the "Posted from town, country" that appears at the bottom of the post, but don't always have images to upload... maybe a ((loc: Glasgow,Scotland)) type tag? Apologies if this already exists in some form.

Jan, you will need to enable this on your site. Click Manage, then click "Edit Settings" next to your site name, and uncheck "Don't show location". email help@posterous.com if you need more info

I don't get the "Posted from ...." on the blog. Show location is enabled and the photo is geotagged (I've downloaded the photo from the blog and checked its Exif data). The posting was made from an iPhone, which shouldn't matter since all the necessary geo data is there. Any clues?
