Posterous Tip: Turn Posterous tags into autoposted Twitter #hashtags

We all know that Posterous is the easiest way to share photos and videos with your friends on Twitter. Now, we've just added a new feature that turns tags on Posterous into #hashtags when you autopost to Twitter or any other microblog.

For instance:

Subject: It really does smell like teen spirit ((tag: grunge, nirvana))

becomes:

To enable this feature, just edit the "Advanced Settings" of your Twitter autopost site by visiting the autopost page and add "{{hash_tags}}" to your custom footer:

Why not make this a default?

super smart feature!

next feature... adding @username tags without putting them in the subject line? that would be terrific.

and why not support #hashtag directly? should be safe in the email title no?

simplytweet did this but in reverse.......twitter hashtags turned into posterous tags

@roland My feeling is that some people would hate it as a default, and some would love it. Since we started off with it off by default, I think it's just safer to keep it that way.

@mike Yes, you could always just put the #tags in the subject line, so that's a perfectly valid way, especially if you only want to hashtag on occasion.

Hummm, well i think there's a posibility of having troubles with the number of tags and amount of characters allowed on twitter.

I'm with Greg. I'd love to add @username tags without them showing up in the subject line. I do understand that this may be complicated and hence not possible, but see if it is.

This is great. One Posterous I contribute to is a podcast, and hashtags in iTunes just seemed like a big mess.

@jose - sounds like a feature request - check the title for twitter length restrictions, since most of us probably autopost to twitter.
Sep 24, 2009
Vincent Chu said...
@jose We check the length of your title and append as many tags as we can before running out of space. So you should not see any cut-off tags, etc..

Hey Vincent thanks for picking my suggestion and making it all about twitter :\

I would like an easier opt in/out but nice work and I'm sure that this will quickly become a popular feature with Twitter users!

I'd like to see this option for supporting tags available to Delicious as well.
Sep 24, 2009
Vincent Chu said...
@mark We already support tagging to Delicious. They should get passed along automatically.
Sep 24, 2009
Vincent do you mind deleting this SPAM comment ? thanks

Are there any chances to tag posts also in Blogger and LiveJournal?
Sep 24, 2009
Lee Hinde said...
I could test this, but to reduce Twitter noise, I'll ask... Do these tags become Posterous tags for that post as well?
Sep 24, 2009
Mark Krynsky said...
@vincent then I guess what I want is tagging to be added to the bookmarklet :)
Sep 24, 2009
Vincent Chu said...
@lee Yes - they are normal posterous tags. We then turn these tags into #hashtags (space permitting)

@mark You can already tag in the bookmarklet. Just add:
((tag: foo, bar, baz, bif)) to the subject and they will become tags.

I've successfully themed my posterous site, but I can't find a footer anywere…

@Joshua Guffey Tags on Posterous are sent to wordpress as "categories." However, due to a Wordpress quirk, these categories must already exist on your wordpress beforehand, otherwise they won't get posted.

This is a great blog site but your explanation of the hashtags is severely lacking. Why hide it from the unadvanced who don't understand Japanese. Do a short video demonstrating your language here.

I'd just really like it if my posterous tags converted to wordpress tags upon autopost.  Posterous staff?  Are you listening?  =)

Ok I'm dense - but it did take me awhile to figure out the "advanced settings" was on the actual Twitter autopost page.

Which is pretty awesome cause if you have enabled you the application - "selective twitter status" (lets you post selective tweets to facebook with a #fb tag), then you can selectively post to twitter (twitter@posterous.com) and _then_ autopost the same to facebook with the tag!.... wew. atleast better than friendfeed aggregating and eating up it's own tail :P

I'd really love tags on Posterous to also be tags on LJ and other blog sites that support tagging. That would be awesome.

Hash tags via Posterous: fine. But: Please describe functionalities userfriendly. Simple rule: Always look to your texts with the eyes of a newcomer visiting you the first time.
Quote: »To enable this feature, just edit the "Advanced Settings" of your Twitter autopost site by visiting the autopost page and add "{{hash_tags}}" to your custom footer.«
A userfriendly description would have been:
»Go to > Manage > Autopost to Everywhere > (add a Twitter connection, if not yet done, via "Add a service") > Click "Edit" > Click "Advanced options" (just above the "Save" button) > Add "{{hash_tags}}" to your custom footer.«

it would be cool if it would be reversed, hashtags that are tweeted into posterous would turn into posterous tags, would save a lot of time

Hope posterous could include a bangtag for identi.ca groups and something similar for twitter lists. That would be really great!
Nov 18, 2009
TMLinux I have to disagree.
tags and hashtags are meant to categorize posts and µnotices.
Groups are meant to distribute info to ppl with same interests.
posting blogs to groups would be spammy

Posterous is a great site. I just started my own at www.steveczajka.posterous.com. I like this #hash_tag feature.

Maybe this could be built for flickr tags, so that when you post an article in posterous it autoposts to flickr and carries the tags with it.
