The Official Posterous Posterous

This is where we post about new features on posterous. You can get a blog just like this by emailing post@posterous.com.

Posterous tip: Post multiple images inline, without a gallery, by putting ((nogallery)) in the subject line of your email

When you email multiple photos to Posterous, you automatically get our fast javascript gallery to flip through the photos.

But sometimes you don't want the gallery, you just want the photos to appear inline one after another. Put ((nogallery)) in the subject line and your images will appear without the gallery view!

This is so great, exactly what I was hoping for. Is it possible to specify where a particular image will be put? e.g. between two paragraphs located somewhere in my post? .-)

Georg, we always post images in the same order/placement as they come to us via email. If your email client supports inline images, you can put them anywhere within text.

If your email client doesn't support inline images, they will all appear at the end. Then you can move them in the online editor.

Awesome, this is great. Question, though: How can you know what order your pictures will be posted in? I've especially had problems when sending pictures from my iPhone and wanting a certain picture to come first, but also when I attach several in Gmail. Any help with this? Is there an order we can work with?

good stuff.
are (()) calls separate or together? i'm assuming if you use tags it's just separate like "((nogallery))((tags: marketing, design))".

cool, i don't think i need that but good to know :D

Brandon, I made some testposts in matters of picture order - the picture you upload first to GMail, for example, will be the first in your post. No matter what its filename is.

Sachin, you don't know if GMail supports inline images, do you? :o

Sep 02, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
GMail does support inline images. You have to turn it on in their "labs" section. It's in beta and has bugs, but it sorta works, sometimes ;)

Yes, the parenthesis for nogallery and tags would be separate

nice. a simple tweak can go a long way.

I wish Gmail inline gallery images worked better. I gave up trying to create multiple galleries in one post since it was such a headache.

My dream (example): Imagine a post about North America, to be able to send 4 photos of Canada, 5 images of Mexico, 3 images of America and (either through inline or by how I attach them-- zip folders?) have 3 separate Posterous galleries for those batches--- 1 for Canada pics, 1 for Mexico pics, 1 for America pics. I've still never gotten this to work with Gmail x Posterous.

Thanks for continuing to innovate
Ryan!

The other day I posted pictures inside the message and wrote text in between it, and it posted as a no gallery option all by itself :) But this is way more elegant!

Nice, I could use this earlier today.

Now if only I could move [[posterous-content...]] between posts, I could fix this easily. And then not have the moved [[posterous-content]] deleted when I delete the post I brought it in with. That would be super.

I know you have this on the list and I hope it's getting closer. It's tedious to recreate an entire post just to add or change a photo.

And speaking of the nice gallery, can captions be added somehow?

This is really handy. Although I noticed that you could have photos inline, before this feature was introduced, simply by having text between the photos. This allows for a mixture of inline and gallery. It looks like this feature can be used sen you want inline presentation but no text between the photos.

Amazing! Options is what we need. Erik said something interesting. Its missing the option of changing this this when you edit. For example, the address of your post should change if you change the subject. And system should ask if you want to autopost again with this changes.

This gallery feature is winning me over. I even regret not being able to see the gallery there when you autopost. So its !great! that link that sends readers back to posterous for the complete gallery.

Suggestion: Wordpress and even Blogspot got every editable option (tags included) in on single board and also a quick edit option that doesn't take you out of the page you are on.

Gisele Diaz L. said...
I suggest you link this to the FAQ where you explain the gallery option. Thanks again!

is there an (easy) way to do this with embeds? i mean when i post a link to vimeo or viddler for example it gets embedded. that's cool but what if i want to show the link and disable embeds for a certain part of the post (or the entire post)? do i have to use HTML?

The future is here and it's still not working with the space... Screwed up my post... gurrr... :)

Any way to remove the gallery view once it's there, other than hard coding it?

Be sure to set your mail preferences to "plain text" instead of "rich text", or things might get garbled and your pics might show up in the wrong place. (Already went over this with Sachin.) In Mail (on the Mac), you can set your preference to "plain text", then if you want to bold some text in your normal email (to a friend, for example), it will ask you if you want to switch to "rich text", but it only does it for that message. Very cool. Anyway, I love Posterous; it is easy enough to use that I have finally started a blog. But, it's so easy and fun that it's keeping me from my other work!

I could really do with editing an image in a gallery. I've posted some pics to try and track down the owners of an SD card I found in the sea (UK) but have changed my phone number.

Would be nice to just change that one pic.

BTW anybody in UK recognise any of these people here.

Thanks,

Just attached a group of sequentially numbered jpgs to an email (sent through gmail). They are out of order in the gallery. doh!
