The Official Posterous Posterous

This is where we post about new features on posterous. You can get a blog just like this by emailing post@posterous.com.
« Back to blog

Posterous Theming: It's here, it's live, and it's time to make your site yours!

Posterous is proud to announce the ability to change the look and feel of your Posterous blog! It's been a long time coming, and are we ever excited about releasing this feature to you guys today.

Choose from five built-in themes
Including one designed by theme creator Bill Israel. And we've got a whole ton more on the way. We wanted to get this in your hands ASAP, and we'll be releasing more into the system as soon as we create them.

Be able to upload header images
Customize your blog by creating a custom blog header in your favorite image editor. Then just upload it and see it at the top of every page on your blog. No coding experience necessary.

And choose new colors
Want to change the link color? Switch something up? Use our color picker and you don't have to code a single line of HTML.

For people who want to customize to the max...

If you're an advanced user, designer, or engineer, now you can totally change the CSS and HTML layout of your site.

Not only that, Posterous themes are similar in many ways to other blog themes made for the web. We built the Posterous Theme Engine to work great with the thousands of existing themes out there! Just drop the theme code into the "advanced mode" editor. Want to add commenting and favoriting? It's just a couple lines of simple HTML away. Read more about it in our theming docs.

Some examples of Posterous Themes in the wild...

Check out what Posterous super-themer Cory Watilo has built with full CSS / HTML customization:

Our friends at Mugasha, Vidly, and Tweetvite have all chosen Posterous to host their company startup blogs. Dustin Curtis is liveblogging his 30 day flight on JetBlue on posterous too!

So what are you waiting for? It's enabled on your Posterous blog now. Go to your Manage page, and click Edit Settings > Theme and Customize to get started.

I do have one criticism, if you will. I find the new drop down tab obtrusive. I love the theme I have up, but the tab slightly ruins it. I liked the simpler, static yellow tab of the Posterous default theme better. I wish there were a way we could opt for the older version or disable the tab from dropping down. I can see this thing driving me mad from annoyance after a while.

@she, what drop down tab? I don't see one on my site! Ah, I see it on yours, so must be part of your theme. Since you can't do JavaScript, you cannot quite turn the effects off I think, but at the least, you can edit your theme and for the sections in the HTML where you see the DIV "posterous_barexpanded_content" you can set "display: block" instead "display: none". It may or may not help depending on what the JavaScript does onLoad... I can look at the JS later.

@she, note though that if you make the posterous bar always visible, then you will need to move the search box elsewhere. It doesn't look right anyway, since it shows through the transparency of the posterous bar when the bar is revealed.

@She, I agree with you about the new Posterous bar, but I have figured out how to remove it. You need to use Advanced theming and then find the CSS code for the 'posterousbar' element. Just add the code visibility: hidden and it'll disappear!

I think it would be great for you guys to add Disqus as a commenting system option. I use it on all of my blogs and it's awesome! Posterous' is still great but I think that added functionality would bring more interest as quite a few use Disqus already.

Second, the Tumblr theme support is a little shaky depending on the theme you get so many will not work w/out some tweaking. At least if you add just the CSS & don't have a Tumblr account to import from.

Anyways, I look forward to seeing new Posterous themes & also third-party themes coming out in the coming weeks & months.

Thanks again for all the killer innovations,

-Mike

Very happy to see themes! Since I'm not very adept at CSS I'm probably not plunging in there just yet. 3 things:

1) Allowing all colors to be changed for a given theme (at least when I looked today you could not change any colors in one theme, only the "accent" color in several others - the original theme had the most control)

2) Some idea of what a good header image spec would be. Like width range and where it appears in a given theme.

3) Background images.

thanks!

Sep 20, 2009
Garry Tan said...
Hey Jeff -- good idea. It'll be up to the theme designer to allow color changes. Unfortunately it is way too easy to myspace-ify blogs if you allow total and complete control of all colors. We believe that the theme designer should have final control over what is customizable, and its not possible to provide total color control to end users.

Background images are coming soon -- it'll be a special feature that theme designers can take advantage of.

Header images will usually be 500px across, and up to 500px high. Again, this is up to the theme designer.

Hope that helps!
-Garry

Jeff Stai said...
hi Garry - thanks for the timely reply! I hear what you are saying about the colors - I expect if I really want to change things I could dive into the CSS. I know enough to be dangerous. Still, a set of totally color-customizable themes would be welcome by this end user!

Again, for each theme a recommended size for a header image and an idea of placement will be a big help. I could do it by trial and error ("oh, that's where it goes") but why? Recommendations would also help avoid excessive Myspaceiness ;)

Good to hear about background images - cheers! - j

@Doron, that portfolio page tricked me for a moment - if you notice, the portfolio is on http://corywatilo.net, whereas the blog is on http://corywatilo.com. What Cory did is map his .com domain to posterous, and in his theme include a link to his portfolio, which is hosted somewhere else under his .net domain. It's a nice trick actually.

Another way of doing it would be to use subdomains. Map one subdomain (e.g. blog.foo.com) to posterous, and include links to other subdomains (or to the main domain), hosted somewhere else.

Today i have costumized my posterous! Thnx for this possibility, blogspot is history now!

But, it will be very helpfull for me if there is the option to chance the color of the blogheader. I changed almost every colour but the blogheader stays black.

Can you fix it? Or tell me how i can fix it?

This is great news. Just updated the looks of my project blog. Looks great! So far you are the only service that creates such a neat looking blog from the moment you send the first e-mail. Congratulations, you are officially number one!

I would like to use the theme I use on my Tumblr blog (http://morgaine.tumblr.com/ , beware: NSFW), which is an adaptation (just CSS stuff really) of a Tumblr theme found in the Tumblr theme garden, but ran into a problem. Apparently Posterous doesn't support {block:Odd} and {block:Even}. Any chance of supporting this in the future?

@Michelle
Browsing to the image shows it as a large size:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/files.posterous.com/headers/228227/scaled500.png?1260943913

In the tag in the header_image div, try setting the height and width to 57.
