Posterous Spotlight: Summer of Dresses
With thoughts of summer just around the corner, women can finally dig into the back of their closets and show off their favorite summer threads. The ladies from Summer of Dresses are helping women all over share photos of themselves not only looking good, but feeling great.
What was the inspiration behind Summer of Dresses?
The idea began when Nicole Weiler made a vow to wear more dresses. I didn't really know her (aside from casually through Twitter) but I started to see lots of women we knew in common start posting dresses to Twitter with the hashtag #summerofdresses. I'm kind of a web geek, so I decided to set up a site where everyone could post photos to one central location. Posterous was a natural choice, since all anyone would need to do would be to send an email!
It started pretty small and then people started telling other people and it just kind of grew from there. I ended up meeting a lot of women through the site that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise.
Nicole can speak to what her original inspiration was, but for me I just liked the idea of dressing up a little bit. More importantly, I liked the idea of people just feeling good about how they look and what they're wearing. Women spend a lot of time criticizing ourselves, trying to lose weight, and just feeling not good enough. This site is about feeling good about how you look -- even if it's just for a few minutes.
What's not great about a summer dress?
I do know it means I have to shave my legs, which is not my favorite thing to do.
You ran a similar blog last year, how did that turn out?
Last year was great! We got tons of submissions and decided to do it again this year.
Where can readers submit their own summer dress photos this year?
Email photos to post@summerofdresses.com. I wrote some tips about how to post here.
Anything else you'd like to share?
One of the things I love about the site is seeing how other people accessorize and mix their clothes. It's given me a lot of inspiration for my own wardrobe. I've never been a person who enjoys clothes all that much, but I'm really starting to have a lot more fun getting dressed -- and I credit a lot of that to Summer of Dresses and the women there. We'd love to get submissions from other cities/countries!
Thanks to Meghan Wilker for the responses!
