Posterous spotlight on SimplyTweet: Twitter client for the iPhone has great Posterous integration

Since we released our API, Posterous has been integrated into a number of Twitter clients out there. We're going to occasionally highlight some of the great tools you can use to update your Posterous site, starting now with SimplyTweet.

SimplyTweet was one of the first Twitter clients to add image support for Posterous. But they didn't stop there. SimplyTweet took things to the next level to make the Posterous experience great.

  • Don't be limited to 140 characters! SimplyTweet supports long tweets. The entire text of your tweet will be posted on Posterous, and your tweet will include a post.ly url
  • Tags! SimplyTweet automatically turns hash tags into Posterous tags on your post
  • SimplyTweet supports multiple photos to Posterous. Attach several images and get an image gallery on your Posterous site.
  • If you click on a post.ly link in SimplyTweet, you get an image viewer of any photos in that post.
  • SimplyTweet supports push notifications! Get notified of @replies and DMs instantly!

SimplyTweet, thanks for all your hard work on the Posterous integration! You can download SimplyTweet at the app store here.

So how is the rest of the functionality of SimplyTweet compared to other popular clients?
Jul 27, 2009
I have been able to replace Tweetie and Twittelator Pro with it. It has a conversation view, which is my major requirement. It's fast and has all the options power users would want (at least all the ones I want). Very happy with it.

I'm reading the description for Simply Tweet in the App store and it sounds like this app has to many bugs to spend the $4.99 for it.

Has their been any performance issues with this app?

Otherwise I'm loving Posterous and I can't wait till they come out with a native iPhone app!

Jul 27, 2009
I haven't experienced any performance issues, and I'm a heavy user. I mean, I use it a lot. I'm not heavy.

Chris, many bugs as in which?

Chris, I've been using SimplyTweet for a long time, and yes, the early version wasn't tip-top, but Hwee-Boon has always been very responsive and squashed bugs very quickly.
SimplyTweet has become my only twitter client on my iPhone, where I usually had two because they just weren't complete.

Performance is very good too, so I'm not sure what those comments are based on (possibly an old version)

Posterous and SimplyTweet are very cool and innivative services. They change my web!

My only complaint at this point is great, now I have 5 Twitter apps to choose from. Not good for my ADD (lol). I have found that each of the majors (Twitterfon, Tweetie, TweetDeck, Twitterific and now SimplyTweet) I have tried all lack at least one essential feature or interface element that would make it top of the heap. Perhaps with some time SimplyTweet will be a replacement as I do want better Posterous integration.

This post brought SimplyTweet to my attention, and I'm so very thankful for it. Posterous integration in a Twitter app is absolutely fantastic. I've found SimplyTweet to be feature rich (good for the "power users"), and as far as I know it does everything Tweetie does (and more!), which is what I was using before.

Being completely honest, I still consider Tweetie's UI to be slightly better; it's cleaner and more in-line with Apple's own apps (a good example is on a Twitter user's profile page). That said, Tweetie lacks in certain areas that SimplyTweet just excels at: Posterous integration (for long tweets, images and tags! Awesome!), landscape browsing in the in-built browser and image viewer (huge plus), push notifications, and being able to load all tabs on launch.

The UI is quite good. Colours and readability (particularly with fonts and font sizes) could be improved a bit, and I'd love to see the ability to tap on a user's avatar to see a large version (Tweetie does this). Other than these very small caveats, SimplyTweet is an awesome app, well-worth the price since it does pretty much everything, and I haven't noticed any stability issues. It's smooth and fast on my 3GS.

Hwee-Boon Yar; well done on an awesome app! I hope development continues for a long while on SimplyTweet, 'cause if so, I'll definitely be recommending it. Cheers.

I love this feature. Multiple images from iphone to blog in a tweet. Why haven't other apps come up with this tagging trick? @evernote for example?

Oh, here's a small tip for Posterous & SimplyTweet users.
If you're like me and don't want to contaminate your posterous with all your short tweets, do the following:
- create a seperate "tweet" posterous for your tweets (you do know, you can have multiple posterous sites, right?)
- make that one default

this will make SimplyTweet (or any other twitter client for that matter) post the tweets to the "tweesterous", and not your posterous.
The only caveat is that you now have to use the specific post email address of your real posterous for posting by email (otherwise it'll end up in your tweesterous)

that's about as many words as users they have ;)

@Sachin yes, the Pre is early on the adoption curve. However, the iPhone has thosands of competing apps while the Pre currently only has a few dozen. Therefore, a new app for the Pre is more likely to be noticed, publicized and downloaded.

Sachin Agarwal said...
@Brent I think the Pre is a great device and will definitely give the iPhone a run, maybe in the second generation

I'm not sure if I agree with the thought to write an app because there are few apps out there. That's like back in the 90s saying you should write Mac software because there is little Mac software out there.

As the Pre gains marketshare and the pre app market matures, I definitely think it's a platform we and other developers should consider.

But also, I'm always going to be biased towards writing apps for the platforms i use :)

And if a developer write apps for platforms they don't use, it ends up like "enterprise software". It's never the same.

Bummer re simplytweet since night before last I spent the $5 to download twitterfon. But so glad to learn about posterous this morning! I'm sold!

Sachin said "But also, I'm always going to be biased towards writing apps for the platforms i use :)". And I say praise God for that! If posterous is the beginning and it is fantastic then I can't wait to see all else you will do in the future.

Say, why not make your own Twitter app, twiterous, as the op said. :)

As attractive as this integration is, if the Twitter app costs money I'm just not interested. There are too many full-featured free options out there. Twitterrific, TwitterFon, and TweetDeck would be the big three.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with your Twitter app. I use the free version of Twitterific to post the occasional picture to posterous. If I wanted to post more pictures, then I'd probably buy SimplyTweet. I don't need to post more than 140 characters, but again, if I did then I'd buy SimplyTweet.

I did buy Tweetie a while ago, but since the iPhone version does not have picture integration for posterous, I haven't been using it lately. I did however write to the developers and asked them if they might consider adding posterous integration (since the desktop version of Tweetie already has it), and they replied, "We'd love to!". So I'm hoping that maybe the next update will have this feature.

What a Great conversation here...and what an excellent idea! Sachin and Gary, you guys should for sure develop your own Twitter app for Posterous!! Sachin, of course you kind of walked right into that one above, but no doubt y'all have been mulling the wine on this one for a while. It's a no brainer!!

Being of the 140+ lovers group :) very glad that SimplyTweet has Posterous built in. Sadly I have yet to go full speed ahead when I noticed that:

(1) TwittelatorPro has MUTE & Subgroups whereas SimplyTweet does not, at least not yet; and TPro has TwitLonger built in;

(2) When posting 140+ msgs to Posterous via SimplyTweet, the tweet shows up at Posterous as one long paragraph vs having paragraph breaks (as TwitLonger does via TwittelatorPro).

Hoping Posterous & SimplyTweet will have these 3 features (mute, subgroups, paragraph breaks) in the future so I can make the full leap! :) Thank you.

i have the same issue with simplytweet as i do with picposterous. id like the option to be able to set it to update any posterous that i am a contributor to, as opposed to only the one my email address is registered to.
