The Official Posterous Posterous

This is where we post about new features on posterous. You can get a blog just like this by emailing post@posterous.com.
« Back to blog

Posterous now imports your old blog, including images

Do you have an old blog collecting dust? Something you started years ago, but never kept up with because it's just too hard?

In just a few clicks, import all your old posts *and media* into Posterous, and be done with that old crufty site for good.

Just go to our new Import Page and enter your blog credentials. We'll go out and grab it all, and create a new Posterous site with just those posts. You can then merge them all into an existing Posterous site, or bring posts in one by one.

If something doesn't import just right, don't hesitate to email us at help@posterous.com. Be sure to include the url to your old site and we'll take a look right away.

Wow, very cool! So if I imported my livejournal blog that has Flickr photos in it, will those photos be imported as Posterous "media" or will they still be pulled externally from Flickr?

Also, comments would be amazing.

Hi there. This is just amazing! I'll probably do it as soon as you guys manage to import comments as well. Is there any chance you can import comments from Disqus?
Jun 22, 2009
Jordi Soler said...
Totally agree: very important that we can also import Disqus comments, especially when you want to move from a Tumblr blog.
Jun 22, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
We will maintain the dates of the posts on the other blog, so they would end up in the right order in the end. Also, the way import is designed, you can do the import, see how things looks, *before* merging it to your existing posterous site.

Commenting is definitely on the list. I'll look into Disqus commenting as well, though I'm not too familiar with how they work or what feeds they provide.

Thanks, all!

The Disqus developers are really good about user support, so don't hesitate to ask them about integration with Posterous.

Yep, Disqus comment import would be awesome. :)

Could you check the following posterous: http://irenehoekstra.posterous.com
I convinced her to move to posterous (from blogspot) but the import doesn't really work well. It only imports posts half. And no images.
Maybe it's the custom template on blogspot? http://irenehoekstra.blogspot.com

cheers :-) (she sent an email to help as well)

You should add support for italian blogging platform Splinder as well, since it's one of the biggest in the country and quite insular. Well, I'd like that XD.

This seems like a fantastic idea for simple blogging, when you want to focus on content and less on the coding and file hosting.

My questions:

If I import my Blogger blog, will the files still be pulled from external sources, or will those pictures be hosted by Posterous from then on?

How well do "xxxx.posterous.com" do in search engine rankings, cuz I've never come across one that I'm aware of.

And... Disqus comments. Ya, can't lose all those comments.

@marco there's a setting in blogger to make feeds "full" or "short". I think maybe that blog has feeds set to short, and so we don't get the entire body content.

Check that setting, or email me if you need more help.

One concern I have with Wordpress is that my blog doesn't appear via the The Wayback Machine at http://archive.org as it needs a database.

Are Posterous-powered blogs dependent upon a database or are static HTML pages generated?

Jun 23, 2009
anthony marco said...
Will I be able to transfer larger media files? I have some embedded mp3s that are 60mb or so on other another blog? Is the current container system okay to handle that?

Before I start a process to bring over close to 40 big files, it'd be nice to know they'll be functional or if I should wait for a bit. These are files that are too big to send via email to posterous, but if import does the trick it's one step removed from direct uploads.

Jun 23, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
@anthony what platform is your other blog on? Please email help@posterous.com and we'll make sure we're setup for your import. Thanks

It's really old.  The blog software (called iBlog) was totally static and uploaded to: http://homepage.mac.com/inertia186/iblog

I figured the only real hope I'd have is to tell the software to publish all articles into RSS.

I have imported my blog from a self hosted wordpress.

Worked very well except for one thing. The images were imported and hosted via posterous. However the image links (when you click on them) link to the original image location. When I remove the old blog these will no longer work.

Jun 24, 2009
Bradley Farless said...
Wow.  That's a major turn-off.  I have close to 600 images in blog entries.  I can't imagine how long it would take to manually change them all.
Jun 24, 2009
Andy Gambles said...
It also looks like there are problems importing thumbnails. In Wordpress where the image is a thumbnail in the post this is not imported.

Jun 24, 2009
Bradley Farless said...
That's a good question that I hadn't even thought of. If a person were to want to leave Posterous in the future would it be possible for them to take their content with them or would they have to lose it all or resort to the old cut and paste method?

What about exporting content from Posterous. It's an important good faith gesture I like to see before I commit to using any hosted platform. I'll admit I haven't spent much time looking for an export feature so sorry if I've missed it.
Jun 24, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
@Rob we already have an api that will allow export of all your sites and posts:

posterous.com/api

We'll be extending this soon to add more features, and also support standard blog apis

Jun 24, 2009
Rob Reed said...
@Sachin, great answer! Though what you have now seems simple enough to figure out from the examples provided, please don't forget the documentation as you add to the API. As I poke around the blog and posterous I find myself nodding my head in agreement with a lot of what I see. Really a beautiful implementation of a clever idea. Lot's of ideas come to my mind, so I'm sure you guys are having fun. Keep it up!

Thanks Bradley Farless
My problem seems to be the same as previous people here. Posts imported but not the whole content. Videos were imported but no images only a link to the images.

Oh, and second the threaded comments idea..it makes me...oooo..speechless

Bradley Farless said...
I think the process isn't quite perfect yet. I had a problem where I e-mailed in a post and after it posted I refreshed the page and the image disappeared. Had to externally host it and link it in. Was weird.

@fixator Your email hit our inbox about 8 hours ago. That was approximately when I fell asleep after a long night of coding (I saw the sun come up).

I am awake now, but we have meetings and other things to attend to before I can look into your import problem

We are not hiding anything. We are not avoiding anything. We respond to every support email personally, we don't skip a single one.

I will get back to you. please be patient

I've had great support from Posterous - personal, prompt response (less than 24 hours). 8 hours seems rather on the impatient side.

@fixator: how much you payin' again for hosting your pr0n site?

I'd like to know if I can manage my Google Ads on Posterous? If yes, I will import later my blog hosted at Blogger.com
Aug 16, 2009
Bradley Farless said...
Can't. I don't think there's any way to add Google Ads to Posterous, though that would be a good way to monetize. Even a revenue sharing scheme with Posterous would be nice. It would give people incentive to import 'bigger' blogs.
Aug 16, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
We don't support Google Ads right now, but we're looking into adding this in the near future
Aug 17, 2009
Bradley Farless said...
Well, I can understand why. It could be hard to implement ads on Posterous since it has such a clean interface. Flashing banners might be very jarring, visually. I suppose once there are themes, or skins for the background at least, the distraction will be lessened.

I also need to be able to import comments from Wordpress. Also, can I preserve my post urls (wordpress default friendly urls on one blog, YYYYMM-title on the other)?

My other problem is that I have some downloads (Wordpress themes and plugins, a lightweight TCL webserver) on my site, and I need to find hosting for them and to correct all the download links in my posts: any suggests for the former?
