Posterous launches easy post tagging via email

We're really excited to be releasing one of our most requested features: tagging! You can now categorize the posts on your site by adding tags either through email, or on the post's page itself.

Add tags simply in the subject of your email using the syntax ((tag: apple, gadgets)). Tagging doesn't have to be a tedious task you do after creating a post; simply tag your posts as you create them right in the message.

Not only can you see all posts on a site with a given tag, but you can view all posts throughout Posterous with a tag. It's a great way to see what people are saying about any given topic. Enjoy!

So.... how do you tag? Since I'm an idiot, I need steps, not a screenshot. Word.

It says so in the post :). In the subject of your post, type ((tag: apple, gadgets)). or go to the post page for any of your posts and you'll see the tag box on the right side.

simplicity at it's best, and yet step by step are still needed to explain. Funny how that is?! Are people that clueless or just lazy to do a little work trying to figure things out.

We live a society where you comment before you read... or talk before you think...

will you add this to the web editor as well, so we could add keywords for existing posts? (although I don't think I'll go through all of them ;-)
Oct 22, 2008
Garry Tan said...
@Marco

You can do that by going directly to the post page itself -- just click "Add/edit tags" while logged in to your blog.

We'll probably be refining the tagging a bit so that it'll be easier to do from the edit/create page as well.

You can add tags in the editor on new/edit post the same was as in an email message. In the title just type ((tag:hello world)). The tags will be added once you click save.

Quick Question: the tags seem to be stored without spaces and no caps, but displayed as entered. E.g. the tag link points to "usergeneratedcontent", the tag is displayed on the page as "User Generated Content".

Which one do I use in the email subject?

Is this upgrade the reason of yesterday's maintenance time?
If so, for upgrades like this one, I think you should put up some kind of post-it image, Apple style, like "We're busy improving Posterous, but we'll be back shortly" ;)

Thank you for this much needed feature.

The subject syntax, with the mandatory double parenthesis, is not intuitive and difficult to remember.

I would have preferred a more intuitive syntax in the body of the post. Any line starting with the keyword Tags is a list of tags, example:

Tags: Apple, Gadgets.

The two syntaxes are not exclusive though and both could coexist.

Oct 23, 2008
Sachin Agarwal said...
@jean sure we could do something like that. But there are good reasons not to.

1. People might actually type tags: apple in the body of their post normally. So are they trying to tag it or are they just typing that text? Should we remove it from the body or leave it there? It's not clear. So the parenthesis removes ambiguity.

2. Putting it in the subject makes more sense than in the body. The subject is where you type words that describe what's in the body, which is what tags are. I think it's intuitive this way. In email, we use the "to" address to specify where to post the email. We use the "from" to determine who you are. And we use "subject" for tags.

"1. People might actually type tags: apple in the body of their post normally. So are they trying to tag it or are they just typing that text? Should we remove it from the body or leave it there? It's not clear. So the parenthesis removes ambiguity."

I proposed to consider as tags, lines starting with the keyword "Tags:" which clearly shows an intention to provide tags. It is very unlikely that anyone doing that would do so for any other purpose than tagging.

"2. Putting it in the subject makes more sense than in the body. The subject is where you type words that describe what's in the body, which is what tags are. I think it's intuitive this way. In email, we use the "to" address to specify where to post the email. We use the "from" to determine who you are. And we use "subject" for tags."

This is the whole debate about meta versus content. Google prefers to discard meta-tags and prefers to analyze content.

In fact we can argue that we provide tags because current the software is not capable of deriving meaning from the content and therefore cannot automatically provide the tags. Therefore tags are really more part of the content than anything else from a semantic standpoint.

The two modes are not incompatible, providing both would enable users to make their choice.

Can I use the tags to create a visible table of contents? I tried adding a tag to an old post that was the same as the subject line and it will not "take".
Oct 25, 2008
Sachin Agarwal said...
@sue a list of your tags will appear on your posterous site, in order with top used tag on top. So in a way, this is like a table of contents.

What do you mean "old post that was ths same as the subject line"? I don't understand.

I was trying to create a TOC. I started by bringing up an old post and added a long tag that was made up of its month and the title (eg. October: Home again, home again). It seemed to enter just fine, but when I went Back to Blog, no tags appeared. When I return to the edit page, under tags it says: None yet.

I know I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Where on the page will the tags display? Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place?

Sorry to be so much trouble, but this is the part I'd really like to get right so that people can click on the tag and get to the right spot in the blog.

Thanks,
SueH

Hi All -- with the help of a Squidoo lens on how to use very, very, very, basic HTML code I have been able to create a nice, clean Contents List in My Profile! Now I can use the tags as they are intended.

Final question: I can get links, bold, and italics to appear using this bit of code, but not colours. Is that happening because of a decision at your end to keep everything in the tones you chose? Or did I mis-enter the code? I'm happy either way, but I would like to know if the error was mine.

Thanks for your patience,
SueH

@Posterous: Guys, a couple of feature requests:

1. Can we please get detailed traffic stats to our blogs? I'm guessing it shouldn't be difficult since you just need to create an interface for the Woopra stats you're already getting.

2. While we're at that, can we also get stats on our RSS feed subscribers?

Hi Sachin -- I have the feeling that when I log onto my own blog, that is being "counted" as a hit by the counter you have incorporated to let us know how may times our sites have been visited. If that's right, can you set it up to count only visits from other people as I often go back to the blog to edit, check the web address, and so forth? --SueH

Hi Sue,
We don't count hits when you are logged in to your own blog. We only count them for hits from people who aren't logged in who aren't owners of the site. Hope that helps, Sue.

Garry, on that topic:
I notice that my site views increase by a far greater number than my individual blog post views. So I'm guessing that means that a single pageview of page 1 of my blog does not increment the pageviews of the 10 posts on that page, correct?

Could you please explain how this whole thing works?

Dec 07, 2008

I believe we don't increment the view count unless the user clicks "Get Comments".

nobody looks at them... unless spiders do!

I would prefere to use Hashtags like #xy insted of ((Tags: xy)). Why? Because I they are used in Twitter as well and a great way to show words that are meant to be tags.
You could not only look for Hash-Tags in the title but also in the Post. That would take tagging in the content to a new level...
Dec 22, 2008
Sachin Agarwal said...
tordans: We prefer ((t:tag)) because there is less ambiguity. What if someone used a # in their post? We would incorrectly think it was a tag. It's very important that we don't incorrectly tag something. Thanks for the suggestion.
Dec 22, 2008
Tobias said...
sachin: I don't agree. From a engenering point of view it might be important not to wrongly recognize a tag. But as a blog author one wrong tag doesnt matter. Especially if i can delete it easily. Did you search your blogs for how many "#word"-Word are there? I you exclude < code > so no comments are recognised I dont think it will be a problem.
The Tag-Nanoformat is so powerfull because its so easy...
btw. ((#tag #tag2 #tag3)) would work as well.

Anyway being able to tag via ((t:xy)) is a great thing even now.

Aviraj Saluja said...
@tordans: I think false positives are a greater concern. Tagging is an intentional, manual action. You wouldn't want even one user who has used # in his post/title to have his post incorrectly tagged. He would have no clue. If anyone wants to post, they can do so by following the simple protocol.

I'm with Sachin on this one.

Did you guys consider automatic tag discovery, based on the posted text and title? There are a couple of (free) natural language processing frameworks out there that could provide a great help.

Besides, it's like you said: from a blogger's perspective, false positives are not too bad as long as you can remove them easily.

Personally, I've always thought that entering tags by hand was a royal pain in the bottom. What are computers for, if not to help with stuff like this?

I think it would be awesome if you guys would be the first ones to innovate in this area (ok, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself and someone else has done it, but you have the public exposure to pull it off ;)).

Just my 2 cents ;)

@Sachin: does the below:

"You can add tags in the editor on new/edit post the same was as in an email message. In the title just type ((tag:hello world)). The tags will be added once you click save."

also mean it will work in the bookmarklet pop-up? I am going to try in a second. ;-)

Also, WordPress supports tags -- so why convert tags to categories? Why not just Posterous tags -> WP tags?

Also, did I say "thank you"? I didn't? I meant to.

quick question: is there anyway that tags in Posterous become tags in WordPress? It requires extra effort to match the tags in Posterous with Categories in Wordpress, because only existing Categories can be use as tags - if I want to sync them.

Another thing, if I have several tags (in Posterous), by which two of them are having correlation with WordPress Categories, then only the first tags is used as Categories.

Anyway, if Posterous' tags become WordPress' tags that would make the Autopost feature complete, IMHO.

Wordpress users should note that tags are understood as categories but are case sensitive and non-matching tags are dropped (rather than used as Wordpress tags).

Thus, given the categories:
One alpha
Two Beta
Three charlie

a post of:
This is a test ((Tags: One Alpha, Two Beta, Three charlie, Snow))

would be assigned to categories Two Beta and Three charlie only.

The case mismatched One Alpha and the no matching category Snow would be dropped.

I do not know if there is a way to also add to the original email to Posterous that will be converted to Wordpress tags.
