Posterous is the best way to publish video and photos from your new iPhone 3G S

Posterous has always been about email, so when Apple announced the iPhone 3G S would shoot video, we already knew it would just work with our site! We've optimized Posterous to work well with the iPhone 3.0, so now it's better than ever.

• Shoot video with your iPhone 3G S. Click "Share" to email the video directly from your phone to post@posterous.com. We'll rotate the video correctly and host it on your site. Video on the web has never been easier

• Use the Voice Memos application included in iPhone 3.0 to record audio. Again, simply click "Share" to email it to your Posterous site. We'll convert the audio to an mp3 and host it inside a slick mp3 player

• The camera in iPhone 3.0 is faster than ever. Shoot photos quickly. Then from your library select multiple photos and click "Share" to email them to Posterous. We'll turn the photos into a great image gallery.

• We always provide the original files on your site for download as well, so your readers can click to see the beautiful full size images from the new iPhone camera.

• Since we're based on email and not a dedicated app, you can email content from your iPhone *even when you have no network connection*. The iPhone will queue the email to be sent once network is available. A dedicated app simply doesn't work when you enter that 3G dead zone.

And as always, we'll update your Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and other blogs with all the media you email to us. We're the universal way to publish from your iPhone to all the sites you use, no app needed!

Got a 3G S? Try it out. Send us some video!

As a die hard Posterous fan I think you guys owe me a 3GS (note the missing space!), otherwise I can't show off these nice Posterous features ;-)

The 3GS video is pretty darn good (see sample - http://tuyennhatvo.com/another-iphone-3gs-sample-video-bart). The fact that Posterous handles to posting of it so well is just icing on the cake.

Marco, well we gave away Peek Prontos when they came out. Maybe we can get Apple to do a similar promotion. *grin*

Will the videos ever be viewable on the iPhone as well like youtube, or twitvid and yfrog are? I just don't want to use another service for just one feature.
Jun 23, 2009
But... you cannot view them on your iphone?????

Jeff, we are getting to that. Please relax a little :)

This is fantastic news, and I can see lots of people using Posterous to easily get their iPhone videos online.

There's only one fly in the ointment - the iPhone mangles the quality of the video somewhat when emailing it. It would be nice to have an app of some kind that could upload the full quality version of the file. That way you could at least get the low res version uploaded while "on the move", and the wifi the full res version when you get back home or to the office.

Well, clearly, there's more than ever a need for a Posterous app (grabs the iPhone SDK cookbook.. anyone?)

Very nice addition - thanks - it appears one cannot post via 3G only wifi. Yes?

@Daniel I don't have my 3GS yet so I don't know what they are doing on their end for compression, vs the original file... But i'm guessing they don't want to email the large one because it would be too slow.

You can also sync you iphone with your computer, then email the original file.

We'll look into doing full size video uploads in an iphone app :)

Jun 24, 2009
@Sachin I think you're absolutely right - it's the right choice for generally sharing video with friends and family, you don't necessarily want to inflict the full resolution video on people. But the option to get full res content onto Posterous would be sweet.
I may try a comparison on my site later on, one emailed from the iPhone, one from my desktop.
Oh, and if you want anyone to beta test a potential app, please let me know. I'd be more than happy to help.

So, where's the G1 love? We have kickass photo and video too! :)

Sachin Agarwal said...
@Brett it should already work! That's the beauty of email. Shoot some video, take some photos with your G1 and email them to us. If it doesn't work perfectly, shoot us an email and we'll take care of it. Thanks!

This is AWESOME!

@sachin awesome!  thanks

love that you guys have done this.

i'm curious though, if we'll have the ability to send a video to posterous via email and have it embed directly on another blog?

I have my posterous set up to post directly to my wordpress blog (mikegoldsworthy.com), but when I send video, it only provides a link...as opposed to pictures, which it actually publishes the picture on my blog as well as posterous.

is there a setting that i'm missing or some way i can set this up?

@mike yes, we will be embedded out video and audio into external blogs soon. thanks

very cool!, thanks for this post, I didn't know that iPhone 3.0 could send multiple photos, but now I do, see the result here: http://wiibart.posterous.com/send-multiple-photosmax5-with-iphone-30

I too would love the option of embedding video into external blogs - particularly blogger.

Is there a maximum length of clip that can be emailed from the iPhone? I tried 2 clips around the 60 second mark and got a message saying they were too long. The longest that it said was ok was around 40 seconds. Just wondering if there's an official restriction from the iphone.
Jul 11, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
Sam, yes I believe the limit is around 45 seconds. That is a restriction on the iPhone itself, and I hope they remove it in an update!

I believe some of the other posters were asking if it's possible to have the audio player embedded into Blogger instead of just a link, which is what I would like also. In addition, it would be great to be able to make the audio player smaller in one's Posterous blog. Thanks.

Thanks for a great service, I haven't used it yet but with my new iPhone 3Gs a few weeks old and itching to be use to its full capacity, I'm excited about the possibility. Now I hope that Apple will remove the 45sec length restriction on the videos capable of being uploaded. Sometimes you need at least a few minutes to tell a good story :)
Aug 31, 2009
Hey Sachin, any ETA on embedding videos on external blogs (especially blogger)?
Nov 16, 2009
Images good-- 45 sec iPhone 3GS super restricting for vlogging :-(

Sachin Agarwal said...
@Courtney if you use our iPhone app or a support Twitter application like SimplyTweet, there is no limit on length
