Posterous Facebook App revamped! Update your Facebook status, control your photos and invite your friends.

Status updates
We've added the ability to choose between updating your minifeed (which is preferable if you like to expand them to short stories or already have the Twitter app installed) or changing your facebook status (which updates your status with an is.gd short link to your new posterous post.)

Facebook Photo posting options
You can now also control how many photos in a post it takes to create a new album in your Facebook Photos. If you send fewer than that number (we default to 5), we just drop it into the Posterous Photos album, but if you post more than that, you'll get an album with the same name as the post for easy organization.

You can see the new settings on facebook right now by clicking here and selecting "Photo and Blog Autopost Options." If you haven't setup autopost to Facebook yet, this is a great time to start.

Invite your friends
Finally, if you're already autoposting to Facebook, we just added a way for you to invite your Facebook friends to read your posterous and get one of their own. Invite your friends now.

Cool. Good work on the new features!
Did you also fix the embedding of non-YouTube videos? And the tags that appear in a short post on the wall?

@ Willem You can now post youtube, vimeo, and google video posts to short feeds. Posting videos to Facebook is service-specific, so if you have other sites in mind, please send us some feedback and we'll work on that for you.

@V C: That's the most important ones sorted. Thanks! :)
They still don't seem to work in my tab though, or is it not retroactive?

Other services you may consider adding are ted.com, archive.org, lookybook.com, revver.com and tcm.com.

Just remembered something: will YouTube playlists work as well? They didn't before. I forgot to report this.

@ Willem:

Unfortunately, these changes aren't retroactive for the feed stories we've already sent to Facebook.

We'll start working on supporting more videos in the tab -- that hasn't changed (yet).

By youtube playlists, do you mean embedding a bunch of videos in a post (given a playlist)? I don't think such support exists.

@V C: Thanks for the info. I'll be looking forward to better tab support.

YouTube doesn't make it very obvious how to do it, but it's definitely possible to embed a playlist. See for example: http://knuffelsmurf.posterous.com/flight-of-the-conchords-on-hbo
The embed code is on the right of the playlist's overview page: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=219280026847F478

Please start supporting .mov files for embedded video

Also, please allow me to add my twitter feed to my home page on posterious.

@Bill Barhydt - You should be able to see .mov files in your Posterous *tab*. However, .mov files aren't currently supported by Facebook in the short *feed* stories. This is a problem that they're working on --- as soon as the Facebook guys start supporting .mov files in feed stories, we'll add that as a feature to Facebook autoposting.

@V C: Thanks. If you look at this post: http://billb.posterous.com/palm-does-what-apple-wouldnt
You'll see there is a .mov link at the bottom which did not get embedded. Do I actually have to mail the file itself or can you take a hyperlink?

Currently we only embed attached files, but we'll be adding support for urls soon as well. Both audio and video. look for this in the near future. Thanks.

Hmmm, perhaps I'm missing something. When I change from "minifeed" to "status updates" and save, it doesn't actually save. It reverts back to "minifeed."

Hi, I don't know where to send this question, so I hope it's ok if I send it here.
My question is simple :) Do you have an API for us Third Party App developers to hook on to ? I'm thinking about building an iPhone app for Posterous, that's why I'm asking :)

The National Film Board of Canada opened up their archives this week. I'd love to see support for that as well! http://www.nfb.ca/

Is there a bug with the facebook app?

The posterous tab on my facebook account isn't showing images, and it looks like its shortening the posts?

Evan -- this is getting fixed as I type. =) Also, big FB refresh tonight. Stay tuned.

If I set to update my status Posterous adds text so that it looks a little silly. For example: Owen posted "is in a good mood" to Owen's posterous http://post.ly/7OT.

When i post, should it now show up in my news feed, etc?
Mar 12, 2009
Garry Tan said...
Owen -- we'll add ways to customize this message soon.

Evan -- it definitely should. Let us know if it isn't showing up.

Do i have to address the post to facebook@posterous.com or does the facebook app pull my posts automatically?
Mar 12, 2009
Garry Tan said...
Should just work automatically whenever you send email to post@posterous.com or facebook@posterous.com. If it's not -- we'll look into it asap!

Be great if we could autopost to Facebook from a private Posterous account. I would like the ability to email updates to Facebook but not have them publicly available via Posterous

I have the Facebook autopost settings set to post to the minifeed, but when I post something, it's going to the feed and ALSO updating my status. So it actually shows up as two entries in Facebook.

Anyone else seeing that, and how do I make it stop? I don't want it updating my status.

Garry Tan said...
Jason -- you can shut this off by editing your facebook autopost settnings -- http://posterous.com/autopost

Set "update status / minifeed" to off / disabled.
