Posterous API: We're a direct replacement for TwitPic

The Posterous API is a direct replacement for the TwitPic API used in desktop twitter clients and iPhone applications. It lets you upload photos to your Posterous site using just Twitter credentials.

Except it's better. We allow you to upload multiple photos and you get an image gallery. We offer the full size download of the image, or a zip file of multiple images. It posts to *your* Posterous site, which may have a custom domain and Google Analytics. And we autopost not just to Twitter, but also Facebook, Flickr, and many blogs. Oh, and TwitPic is down all the time. That's no fun.

Michael ArringtonGuy Kawasaki, and Rainn Wilson all use Posterous in place of Twitpic. They email photos to Posterous, and we update their Twitter and Facebook accounts. We're extending this to the desktop and iPhone apps with this API.

Coming soon: support for audio, video, and other files. We can handle it all.

If you use a Twitter client that has TwitPic support, email them and let them know they can add Posterous support today! We use all the same methods, responses and errors, so integration should be a breeze.

API documentation can be found here.

See the release on Techcrunch here.

Will it work with TwitterFon IPhone app yet?

@Dugdale TwitterFon uses Twitpic now so it should be a breeze for them to add support for Posterous. You should contact them and encourage them to add us :)

Sachin,

I have a question for you since you seem "in the know". Do you know of a WP plugin that would feed in all your twitter posts into a WP page on my blog and then provide full credit for the links within the tweets (dofollow) since twitter uses nofollow?

Thanks,
Dave

ps. love the css on this site - nice and simple.

Another question. If I want to upload a photo to the site while I am on the site (not via email) how can I?

Right now we're focussed on our post by email technology but we'll be adding web uploading soon.

You can also email us questions, help@posterous.com

Cool idea to do the API as a replacement for twitpic, but embedding credentials like their API does is scary. I'd much rather rely on my posterous cookie or posterous credentials when using a posterous API, and let the twitter oAuth take it the rest of the way.

Garry Tan said...
Kirk - We'll definitely support transferrable Twitter oAuth credentials if/when that gets implemented.

Nice!! Lets hope app developers embrace this posterous API! You should keep a contest or something to encourage twitter app developers into integrating your API in their services.

Or, if you do not want to get into that mess, at least have a section which would display apps that employ the posterous API.

Let's see which is the first app to use your API. I would try to profile them at twi5.com ;o)

Will posterous be a downloaded blogware like wordpress or will it stay as a hosted blog? Btw, when can we expect some more control over the looks of our blogs :)

Yes, finally what I was waiting for is here! Thanks guys.Question: Does the Posterous twitter API also support autopost? (So, other blogs can read it).

Sachin Agarwal said...
Hi Prabhpreet. Absolutely. If you post using the api and already have a posterous account, we'll autopost your stuff everywhere. thanks

That's awesome. The image gallery feature of Posterous is what convinced me to switch over from tumblr to Posterous, and given how often I use twitter and twitpic, this is definitely a step in the right direction.
Great going, team Posterous!

oowee, posterous takes on twitpic. yall's galleries are teh hotness. rock on
Apr 19, 2009
Good work man! Hopefully TwitterFon for the iPhone changes this up. You guys should just make your own iPhone App... we cant even email more then 1 photo right now until 3.0 comes out in june, but even then the iPhone scales down the actual shot.

-- You make the app... I will DEF buy it!

ok, but this part, ticking "post to fb" "post to twitter" did not work. or do you have to put the comment in both boxes?

When can we likely expect that a client that's got their wits about them will support the addition of the Posterous API ? Any ideas on time??
Apr 19, 2009
sean casey said...
So if I understan you guys correctly I will be able to post Multiple photos to Posterous w/ this new thingmajig instead of having to use something like the ePhoto app for iPhone to do it?
Apr 19, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
@sean we hope to have client integration very soon. If there's a client you already use, please email them and let them know they can add us now

And yes, these clients will be able to send us multiple photos in a single post and we'll turn them into a gallery with a zip file download

Apr 19, 2009
Nice. I will have to try this out in place of TwitPic. Always looking for ways to maximize time.

Well, it seems the new Tweetie (atebits) has the Posterous coolness already? Certainly going to try asap!

Ref API: looks like there's no implementation to post multiple images into one posterous post (yet) - just tried with Tweetie/Mac and each attached image was posted into one seperate posterous post.
I'd also like to see a away to select the posterous you're posting to. I don't want my tweetpics to clutter my "real" posterous, but I could have a "twosterous" for tweets only.
Apr 20, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
Hey Marco: yeah we support multiple images but no one is using that functionality yet. It's a bit more work for the clients to support that since they would have to disable it for Twitpic, and enable it for us only. But we hope to get it into clients soon.

WRT choosing your site: we're working on api calls to get a list of your sites and then being able to choose where it posts to. It will be up to the clients to implement the UI.

Thanks

Good job guys, this is why I love Posterous, you guys keep innovating. Right now I'd wait until you work out site selection though because my Twitter email is different from my personal Posterous account. I'm in the same situation with Marco Friessen
Apr 22, 2009
Sachin Agarwal said...
@Aulia Which Posterous site this API posts to actually has nothing to do with the email address used on your twitter account, only the username

Your Posterous autoposts to twitter username "aulia" so if you use that username with any Twitter client (Tweetie has already added support for us), it will post to your primary Posterous site.

Let me know if you need more info

Great job on making the API compatible with TwitPic. We have just added support for it in OutTwit - http://blog.techhit.com/55180-outtwit-now-supports-posting-picture-files-and-outlook-email-attachments-to-twitter

@Sachin - I'll be on the lookout for the new API features. But I don't think as many people email video files around :)

When posting through Twitteriffic 2.0 or on Tweetie for the Mac it makes separate posts for the photos. Doesn't make a gallery. Perhaps they haven't implemented the API correctly?

self plug for SimplyTweet:

SimplyTweet 1.5 is out with Posterous support - uploading multiple photos in a single tweet) and viewing multiple photos in a single tweet.

There's also SimplyTweet Lite which is free and has the same Posterous support.

You are forced to crop every photo after you chose it in v1.5, it's fixed in v1.6.
