New: private posts on Posterous!

You can now create private posts on Posterous to share with just a select group of people. Simply email private@posterous.com. We'll reply back with a secret url that you can give to the people who you want to share that post with. You can also make a post private on the post editing screen.

This post won't show up on your public Posterous site, or in your RSS feed. And if you have Autopost set up, private posts will NOT be autoposted to your other sites.

As always, send feedback and questions to help@posterous.com.

Awesome. If I'm not mistaken, this makes Posterous even more unique than it already is!

I also like the addition of the comments and fav stats on the manage page.

Good going guys!

Thanks guys. This is an interesting and unique feature - not doubt, but I don't think it really solves the problem for some of us who want to have a protected blog or site. As much as I would like this to be my solution, it's not unfortunately. Cool idea though.

@Imperfect -- don't worry, we'll be adding the ability to have multiple posterous blogs on one account, so you can have a public blog AND/OR a password-protected blog, AND/OR a blog that can only be accessed by specific posterous users.

This is just the beginning. We like to roll out starter features and then improve on them asap.

wow! that makes posterous simply superiour to all other photo-sharing tools that I know in the respect of: hey, now I can finally send a mail to everyone with a secret URL in it that offers a gallery AND a ZIP download for those who want to have full resolution pics. and without my friends having to register/login/sell their soul to do so. that's just VERY VERY COOL!

Excellent! I've had several things recently that I wanted to post for clients only. Rather than post them publicly on the blog, I've been using email as the vehicle for delivering them. Looking forward to exploiting this new feature.

auto-expire would be a great enhancement, e.g. send to private-7d@posterous.com to have the post automatically self-destruct after 7 days. If https was supported, one could relay secure "burn after reading" messages.

Unless I've missed something, private posting right now works in two steps:
1) E-mail to private@posterous.com
2) E-mail the private URL to my friends

I propose that Posterous does the second step for me.
Here's how it would work:
1) E-mail to private@posterous.com, friend1@mail.com, friend2@mail.net, ...
Posterous now sends the private URL of my blog post to all the friends in my recipient list.

This also solves the problem of group support, as people can usually set up groups in their e-mail application of choice.

@Willam We could definitely do something like that. But then those users would be receiving two emails (the original email from you and the email from us) which might confused them. So we leave it to you to do that. Maybe we could do something where you specify the other emails in the subject or body of the message instead...

You're right of course. It's getting late, I'm not that sharp any more. :)
Yes, something similar to how you've solved tagging should do the trick.
Thanks for the fast response. I'm a Pownce refugee, but I'm already starting to like it here. :)

How about transfering private Posts to normal posts! Or with the new different blogs to transfer(copy/move) a post from blog to blog!

Khent, Posterous allows you to do both. From your post management interface at http://posterous.com/main/account just Edit the blog post for which you want to change the privacy settings. Click on 'More post editing options' and you'll be able to make a private post normal (or vice versa). In that same view, you will also see an option to post it to any of your other blogs.

What about allowing a private post to autopost to an authorized blog. So I configure the links to other blogs that allow for autoposting of private posts. Then, if I want to post a private journal entry, I post it to posterous as private, posterous then autoposts to all blogs that I have selected to receive private posts.

good stuff. would be even better if we had the option to password-protect posts. this would allow me to grant repeat access to particular visitors with minimal effort on my part.

I want a certain group of people to always have access to my private posts, and would prefer not to have to send out an email every single time I write a new one.

perhaps allow users to leave a password hint - on the page, if it is a default pw/on the post itself if it is a unique one - and then *only if necessary*, email individual readers the password to the post.

I'm with Paul Masters... Looking for some way to autopost a private audio file in a private blog, but I guess you've probably got some good reasons you don't want to do that...

I have been using penzu for my private journal but the images that I wanted to keep were reduced and basically useless. Then I decided to check out privacy options on posterous. What more can say. Sorry penzu.

@Johan:

We will soon be releasing Penzu 2, which will allow you to store your images in their original format and download them.

Penzu is the opposite of Posterous—we offer privacy FIRST as opposed to privacy as a secondary or add-on feature.

Our next release will come with a bunch of other features that most have asked for above.

Stay tuned!
