New on Posterous - Post to Picasa, YouTube, Vimeo, FriendFeed, and others!

It's been an exciting week here at Posterous and we're keeping things going by announcing a slate of new Autopost sites for photos, videos, status updates, and more:

Photos and Videos:
 - Picasa
 - YouTube
 - Vimeo

Picasa photos will be saved in your "Posterous Photos" album. Any videos you attach will be automatically uploaded to your YouTube and Vimeo for processing.

Microblogging Sites:
 - Identi.ca
 - Jaiku
 - Plurk

Keeps your status updated automatically with the title of your post and a short URL link.

Bookmarks:
 - FriendFeed
 - Delicious

Automatically keep your friends updated on FriendFeed with your new posts and photos. On Delicious, each new post will be added to your bookmarks along with any tags you've made.

These new autopost sites make it super easy to share the photos and videos you take from your phone or camera with your friends, taking the hassle out of uploading to each site you're on. This isn't the last of the autopost sites either -- we're going to continue adding sites, so if there's a site you want please send us an email at help@posterous.com

PS - I'm Vince, the newest member of the Posterous team along with Brett. I helped develop some of the features you've already seen like the Facebook app and Twitter comments and I'm psyched to keep developing some more as a new addition to the team!

On the blog (below profile pic), the vimeo link isn't formating correctly, it adds an additional: /l:app-1962 - to the URL. Also, on another subject: friends has been telling me the comment option 'Post to twitter' isn't working, the short url isn't generated to twitter.

Vincent Chu said...
@Nick I took a look at the URL -- that's actually the URL that Vimeo sends to us. It does link correctly to your videos page.

Nicholas Chhan said...
@Vincent I know it links correct. I'm just being fastidious in terms of aesthetics :p It should just end with /videos

You need to post a master list of autopost sites and their e-mail addresses. I had to try both 'identi.ca@posterous.com' and 'identica@posterous.com' to find the right one to use (and it's 'identica@...' FWIW).

I'm still having problems getting autoposts to go through to my services when I use posterous from my twitter client for images. Regular posts emailed to my posterous site get auto-posted just fine.

Out of curiosity, since you use OAuth for autopost to Twitter, why aren't you using it for YouTube autopost instead of requiring people to give out their YouTube username/password? Am I missing something about YouTube's OAuth that wouldn't allow this?

Vincent Chu said...
@gpittman Thanks for the suggestion -- we'll look into it!

@The One True b!X No reason other than convenience -- username/password remains the easiest choice. However, we'll probably roll out YouTube OAuth ...

Cool! I tested this just now and it successfully worked with Plurk, Twitter, Blogger and Tumblr. I wonder though, why the comments on Plurk is disabled and is there any way to change it?

@Vincent Chu Any even off-chance a YouTube OAuth might be alpha or beta by Comic-Con? I'll volunteer to test? ;)

(A number of us from WHEDONesque are planning on using Posterous to report stuff from Comic-Con, but I'm loathe to give out my site passwords to other sites. In the end, I'll just Posterous and YouTube separately if I have to, but...)

I'm curious: how do you guys tell the difference between someone else's video that I'm sharing (through the Share on Posterous tool, for example) and my own videos. Do I need to do anything special to make sure videos (or whatever) that I'm just sharing don't end up getting uploaded to my YouTube or Facebook stuff?

So if I have a link that I want to post to my posterous, does the tagging via email feature (the one in the subject line) autopost directly into Delicious tags as well?

If I want to post a link to twitter and delicious with a comment, it seems like...

To: twitter+delicious@posterous.com
From: me
Subject: check this out

http://example.com/blah/blah/blah
^D

...should (a) tweet "check this out: http://example.com/blah/blah/blah" (or the shortened version *of that url* not my posterous url that mirrors this tweet), (b) bookmark *that url* not my posterous url that mirrors this tweet , and (c) put this on my posterous stream.

Basically, if I'm reading stuff and find something interesting I want to share it on delicious and twitter in the normal way without sending everyone on an extra click through my posterous stream.

It looks like I could get (a) by changing the template in Advanced Options on the twitter page.

I don't see a way to achieve (b).

(c) just works.

Thanks.
