New on Posterous: Audio and video *plays* on your iPhone in Safari, no flash needed

You already know that Posterous is *the best* way to post from your iPhone to the web. Whether you're taking photos, shooting video, or recording a voice memo, you can email it to us and we host it all.

Now, audio and video you attach and send to Posterous can be played on an iPhone in Mobile Safari. No more "missing flash" errors! (Just for the files we host, not those on other sites).

The new iPhone playable video files are also available via our API, so Twitter clients and other applications on the iPhone can play them. Email your favorite Twitter client and let them know!

We love the iPhone, and we're committed to making the Posterous + iPhone experience great.

is this only for newly uploaded videos, or has my back collection also been converted?

Sachin Agarwal said...
We went back and converted some of the older videos but not all of them. If you email me, sachin@posterous.com, i'll look into re-encoding all your old videos.

You are guys are flat out going to frustrate everyone else into giving up, given the crazy proliferation of improvements. Hell, you make me want to give up and our business is in no way related to Posterous! ;)

@Tom we're working on an email based secondary ticket market now. You might as well just give up ;). haha jk

AWESOME! Of course, I wouldn't expect anything less from an already stellar platform and your previous connection with Apple. Job well done!

So you guys are the first to free the iPhone from the Flash-curse? Great move! I love Posterous!

How are you doing it?
Jul 06, 2009
Wesley de Souza said...
There are some guidelines to add multimedia content to iPhone, but mostly you need to link to an MP3, M4A or M4V properly encoded for this device, and the iPhone will launch the player when you click the link.

Kahlil Lechelt said...
But they say it plays in Safari right? So no extra player to launch... Is it HTML 5?
Jul 07, 2009
Wesley de Souza said...
No. The player is built in iPhone, it's like a windows media player embedded in a web page using the <embed> tag.

exactly what Garry said, congrats on finding a typo, and chillax a little. it's better than a typo in our source code :)

Bradley Farless said...
Well, that's certainly true.  By the way, I'm able to access Posterous sites again. Not sure if it was a problem with my laptop or if the issue resolved itself...

My bad for being a nitpicker.  Your stuff is great guys.
