Introducing commenting via email

Yesterday we introduced commenting via email. When someone comments on your post, you get an email. No need to visit the web to post another comment, just hit reply! Your comment will be added to the post and emailed to other users on the thread.

Email is not only the easiest way to share files, but it's the easiest way to comment on posts and communicate with friends. It's very natural to have a conversation over email regarding that mp3 you just shared or the photos from your vacation you just posted. And that's why we introduced commenting via email.

We hope it leads to more commenting on posts. Let us know what you think!

I am starting to use rich email again after using plain text for over a decade. The reason is posterous and how much easier it is than typing out the HTML all the time. One question though: is it possible to add blockquotes without typing the HTML?

This is great! I didn't realise that it was a new feature even though I had received comments via emails. Perhaps if the wording was changed to "Reply by email above this line to comment on this post", more users would know about it.

Is it possible to remove comments by email. Sure email is a very natural format to have dialogs back and fourth, but its also a rather natural format to moderate your comments, too.

@colin removing comments by email seems pretty unnatural to me. How would you indicate which comment you want removed? Seems much safer for you to go to the comment you want removed and explicitly click the remove button.

@sachin: I actually haven't played around with comments on Posterous too much, but if I am correct, a blog owner (can potentially) receive an email for every comment made. Were an offensive comment made, they would simply reply with an "action code" and the previous comment would be removed. They would require the blog owner to keep on top of comments if she wanted to thus prune them.
