Group blogs become more awesome: Now launching Group Profile and Autopost

If you need a way to get people together to contribute to a group blog AND Twitter AND Facebook Page (or any other sites we support), Posterous has an answer for you.

Today, we're launching big upgrades to our group blog system so that now you can setup a group blog to have its own profile AND its own autopost sites. We use it here on our very own blog!

If you haven't set up a group blog before, it's simple. Just go to your Manage page and follow these simple directions:

Posterous group blogs make it easy for lots of people to all post and collaborate because all it takes is an email address -- no Posterous account is needed for people to participate and get right into it. Now we've brought that power to Facebook, Twitter, and wherever else you and your group have an audience.

As always, we'd love to hear about how you're using it and how we can make Posterous even better. Email us anytime at help@posterous.com if you've got comments, questions or suggestions.

I already created a separate group account to try to accomplish this. Is there any way to transfer "ownership" of the group blog to my personal account? We don't have many posts, so maybe I should just recreate it?

I dont understand how I am suposed to do in order to have the group account tweet but not tweet myself... as described in the image above.
Dec 10, 2009
Daniel, you and I share the exact same issue. I've emailed support to see if it can be done. Unfortunately there's just too many posts to recreate with mine. Hopefully someone can answer!

Daniel, Stephen -- email help@posterous.com and we'll take care of it.

David -- sounds like we need a group@yourblog.posterous.com so that it only autoposts to the group stuff. We'll discuss in the office later today and get a fix out fast.

David -- actually group@yourblog.posterous.com will work right now -- try it if you want to only post to your group autopost sites and not your own personal ones.

Can I transfer my separate company blog over to my account now that we have the new group functionality?

I currently have it set up under a separate account to keep it from auto posting to my personal external accounts.

I'm getting the wrong feeds for my facebook page - seems to be getting from my primary site only

i already have connected my primary site with my facebook, is that the reason why or am I doing some settings wrong?

Thanks for this - excellent stuff!

I'll spend all day phoning my friends telling them how great Posterous is for a link on group blogs to filter posts by contributor. Pretty please!

Dec 11, 2009
Thank you for the group profile feature, I'd been waiting for that one.

Is it possible when commenting on your own group blog to auto post the comment to the group twitter rather than the contributors twitter?

This is a great feature. Now people do not have to create a different posterous account for a group blog.

This isn't actually related to this particular post, but I just wanted to say this is THE absolute greatest blogging site I've ever seen. My friend turned me onto it and I immediately did a backflip, abandoned blogger, and created an account.
Ok, I didn't actually do a backflip... but my frown turned upside down!

We cannot seem to figure out how to link our posterous account to autopost to the facebook group page we've created. Facebook does not list the group page as an option to allow the posterous app to access. Any suggestions?

I don't think the Facebook API allows for posting to groups like you can to Fan Pages...  yet.  So that's why Posterous doesn't do it...  I could be wrong though.  Seems like if you could do it, Posterous would've enabled it already.

posterous contributors get a message when a new post is posted.
Will we be able to use it as a group newsletter tool, too?
(meaning: group authors AND group subscribers AND "email subscribers to the group" get a new post via mail?)

I emailed help@posterous.com a few days ago about merging accounts with no response. Shall I resend?
Dec 17, 2009

@andy gambles:
I already asked about merging accounts earlier in this thread...  they can't do it yet.

Their advice was to just make the new site under your account with a temporary name, use the bookmarklet to copy each post over from the old posterous to that new site, then delete the old site, and change the name on the new site to the one you had with the old site.

Make sure anything you have hosted with Posterous gets re-hosted on the new posterous though.  I.E. if you sent video and pix in your emails that are local to the posterous account.  They may get deleted along with the old site, and the bookmarklet simply copies the file URLs only.  If you autopost, then that's no worry--just grab the YouTube/Vimeo/etc version of video, Flickr/Picasa/etc version of your pix and use them in that post.

If you need some help understanding what I'm talking about, DM tweet me at @starrwulfe or contact me thru my posterous at www.starrwulfe.info

Hi there. I joined to posterous afew days ago and I'm in love with it =).
I just have a concern, when autoposting to tiwtter and to tumblr I can stripout the backlink to posterous, but NOT in Facebook, why? In fact what I need is make my posterous private, but if so I would not have autoposting... (I think you should give the autopost OPTION to the private blogs).

What do you use to annotate parts of images? That seems like a very nice way of doing it.

How can I get the contributors usernames to show under the "Contributors" title on the sidebar?

When I go to Contributors on my account there's only the emails of the people I invited, no way to add their names or userpics.

OK, so don't hate me, but folks in my contributor group want to be able to post to posterous FROM Twitter. That's to say, some want to post longer content via email and others just want to tweet using their favorite Twitter client and have those show up as blog posts. Is this possible? Do you have suggestions?
