Great! Thanks. I'm assuming that this feature was added specifically after I asked to it, which makes me feel all special and fuzzy inside.

Leo, you're one of our top users. Of course, man! (And you too, Aviraj.) And of course Jeff Morin and Dustin Curtis asked for it too. Actually, we've been getting so many requests that we couldn't imagine doing anything else! Keep the feedback coming -- it definitely lets us know what we should work on next. =)

This is exactly what I was waiting for!

Neat. I didn't really care much about this feature until it showed up. Now, I think it's awesome. However, this makes me want the feature to customize the colors on my posterous so that it would better fit in with the colorscheme of my site.
Aug 18, 2008
I also would like to customize the default template. And three other features... 1. I would like to add images when I edit a post. 2. When Posterous put a title on my Twitter, some letters look like HTML code, for example: "é". Easy to fix? 3. I would like a FeedBurner integration. POSTEROUS IS AWESOME!!! I have just decided to use it for my personnal blog.
Aug 18, 2008
Great!
Aug 18, 2008
To expand, this is the feature I have been waiting for. It makes my posterous feel much more like my own space now that I can bring it under my own domain name.

Thanks for the feedback guys, and keep it coming. The encoding problem we're looking into, and theming is in the queue of high priority things we're working on.
Aug 18, 2008
Another feature that I would like: something like categories/labels...

Aug 18, 2008
damn was so looking forward to switching from blogger to this feature but i keep on getting redirect loop issues when setting it up!

any idea what i could be doing wrong ? my dns is through afraid.org and both my domain names (www.varen.co.za and varen.co.za) are pointing to where they should any ideas people ?

Aug 18, 2008
Leo Utskot said...
Nico: The www.varen.co.za needs to be pointing to a CNAME instead of an A record. The CNAME should be posterous.com (in some DNS config systems it´s important to add a . at the end also). In the posterous config, are you using the domain varen.co.za or the subdomain www.varen.co.za?

I'm looking for clarification about the "site views" stats. The total site views is listed under the name of my blog. This number doesn't match the number of views next to each post. Does the total filter out the same member viewing different posts? Also, do either of these numbers reflect me viewing my own post?
Aug 18, 2008
leo: currently i have both the domain name & the www subdomain defined as an A record. should i define the www subdomain as a CNAME and the domain as an A record ? (tried the trailing . but afraid.org reckons it's not valid)

thanks for the help!

Aug 18, 2008
also, when i "edit site details" and try to save my domain name it goes into the redirect loop, but here's the kicker, if i point to a specific post i.e. http://www.varen.co.za/switching-from-blogger it works fine ?

is this the place to ask for help ? don't want to be spamming the comments section with nonsense :)

Nico -- Great news, we've resolved the issue with your domain name. Thanks for using posterous. If anyone else has problems getting this working, don't hesitate to contact us at help@posterous.com.

great stuff and yes i also think that tags and categories would be great!
Aug 19, 2008
Three other features I would like... 1. Redirect nesposit.posterous.com/[anything] to www.blognico.com/[anything] (as Blogger does). 2. I would like to receive an email which contains the copy of a post if I modify it on Posterous.com (the idea is to have everthing within my email system: posts, updated posts, comments from others, and comments from me). 3. A search text field at the top my blog to let the readers to search.

Aug 19, 2008
The custom domain name support is great. So, I hope I will have my domain name (instead of nesposit.posterous.com) everywhere, especially in the links posted on Twitter and within the emails I receive.

Having your own domain name in the 'net universe is your symbol, alter-ego, etc. One wants to express oneself to the n'th degree possible.

Co-branding, at a minimum.

Thanks,
Robert

Works great even for subdomains (you have to uncheck Verify name server). So, now I can have bali.barb.sk for my posterous blog while I can point www.barb.sk to my future homesite (which does not exists yet but someday...)

yup works great (mine is at post.theloneobserver.eu ).
however, I think there may be a cookie issue.. somehow I can't logon to comment on a user domain.. the logon works, but when I get sent back to the page to comment, the logon is no longer...

I realize this is a small issue, but when I manage my "posts" and see the number of views, I would also like to be able to see which posts have had comments and how many.

I know this is shown at the end of each post, but for older posts I do not want to go through pages and pages to find that info when it could possibly be all located on one page.

Thanks for listening.

Hey Evan, just sent you email -- should be a straightforward fix. We'll be revising the instructions soon with specific screenshots for GoDaddy.com. (Probably one of the most confusing websites ever, but the cheapest domains somehow.)

Thanks a lot! I see that the encoding issue with Twitter is fixed.
Sep 07, 2008
Oops... I see no encoding problem on Twitter.com but the issue is still here when I look at the Twitter autopost in Twirl.

how about support for subdomains? if i can setup posterous.mydomain.com can i point it to my account here?
Sep 12, 2008
Garry Tan said...
Yes, definitely. Just set up your DNS such that a subdomain e.g. whatever.yourdomain.com either has:

a) a cname to posterous.com.
b) an a record to the appropriate ip address

Then fill out the virtual host field on edit site (http://posterous.com/main/editsite) and we'll do the rest. You'll have the correct subdomain as you expect.

but: perhaps it's only my recent posts, but I get far less views on my posts since forwarding to another domain. any ideas whether there is a systematic reason for that? or do I just have to post more exiting things? ;o)

Screenshots for godaddy would be great. Can't tell if maybe their "forward" feature overrides A/CNAME setups?
Oct 08, 2008
Garry Tan said...
It does -- you actually should not use forwarding for any domain you want to use with posterous.
Oct 08, 2008
Also, how about allowing multiple personal domains to point to the same posterous site? I.e. my son and I both have domains we'd like to point to our "family" blog. Thx!
Oct 08, 2008
Gary -- Thanks. Seems to be working now, so I guess I'll wait to see the Godaddy screenshot instrux to figure out the A or CNAME method. Thx again for a great service.

Garry, I am having the exact same issue as Evan was earlier. Everything looks to be correct but every time I try and get through, I get message 'Try to fix these issues and try again.

* Virtual host (www.sonicsring.com) is not currently pointing to the right place. We found:
o CNAME RECORD: sonicsring.com.

Please set your DNS servers to the correct address (CNAME to 'posterous.com.' or A record to '67.207.139.81') and try again.'

The weird thing is, it was working for a while, then without doing anything, it just stopped.

Garry Tan said...
@David if you run an nslookup on www.sonicsring.com and you see the right thing (a cname to posterous.com or an A record to 67.207.139.81), then you can uncheck "verify" and you won't see that error. It takes some time (up to 24 hours) for dns information to refresh everywhere, which is why you may see that error.

Ben Dai said...
Great job.
I thought it cannot support cname, because the method how to set up cname did not show up at the help page.
http://posterous.com/help/custom_domain
After I check up with the whole blog and find this article and follow the cname method, it works very well. several minutes later, my posterous was pointed to my domain. (http://i.daibin.info).
I hope Garry and your group can add cname method to the help page.
Thanks for your work.

Garry Tan said...
There's a hitch when it comes to the CNAME -- if you ever use the same domain for email (MX record) as well, you'll have problems because CNAMEs have higher priority than MX records and email won't work. If that's not a requirement for you, then CNAME's are fine.

Hi! My DNS servers hadn't yet received the blog subdomain I want to use when I hit "Save" after having added a custom domain name. So, of course, I got "Please set your DNS servers to the correct address ...". I have now verified (using dig from another place) that all authoritative DNS servers have received the update, but I still get the "Please set your DNS servers to the correct address ..." error. It seems that your DNS servers are caching the negative response. In this case they shouldn't. (My apologies if this is a repost.)
Jan 19, 2009
Garry Tan said...
Hey Martin -- if you just uncheck the 'verify' -- it will work fine. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll take a look at our code to see what we can do to speed up / remove the cache if it is being applied in this case.

Hey Garry, is there any way that I could post to post@mydomain.com instead of post@mydomain.posterous.com - would that work via CNAME magic or something else? (btw. I don't need email to work on that domain for other purposes)
I already redirected the '@' prefix in the A record, but that doesn't seem to do the job. And as I'm completely ignorant to this domain magic, I just wanted to ask... Thanks!

I'm currently trying to set up the subdomain. which is http://answers.askthetrainer.com

I'm a bit confused with the CNAME and A Record. I want the posterous blog to go under answers.askthetrainer.com so if anybody goes to my current posterous.... askthetrainer.posterous.com it will automatically go to my subdomain thus avoiding duplicate content through google.

Is this accomplished by using the CName or ARecord?

May 31, 2009
Disregard that last post, I think I did it! Now what I would like to be able to do is either put a custom header or put the whole blog in a frame in the design of my site? Is that possible?

Hi,

Dumb question I'm sure, but can things be configured so that instead of pointing to your own domain or subdomain, you can point to a subfolder of my own domain?

So instead of pointing to:

www.mydomain.com or
blog.mydomain.com

we can have:

www.mydomain.com/blog ?

Thanks, Adam

Can anyone help me setting this thing up for my own domain. Its not hosted by godaddy, my hoster uses the popular confixx-interface and it just gives me the possibility to forward to another domain, so i put in "http://67.207.139.81". It accepts that and tries to reroute the requestst, but it seems like it got stuck in a big loop. My website is www.ex-urban.de if you'd go there you'll see what happens. Help would be highly appreciated.
