The Official Posterous Posterous

This is where we post about new features on posterous. You can get a blog just like this by emailing post@posterous.com.

Autopost to everywhere, even your existing blogs

We're celebrating our 1 month launch birthday by announcing a big new feature. Posterous now makes posting to even your existing blogs easier.

We're proud to announce support for our first wave of blogging platforms: Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad, Movable Type, Livejournal, tumblr, and Xanga. If you use any of these sites -- well, what are you waiting for? Set up autopost now.

Are you sick of having to log into separate sites and post/upload separately each time? Attach your stuff to one email and you're done.

At Posterous, we're totally driven to create things the right way -- the way we ourselves would want the best blogging platform in the world to work. We host your full images and files, no matter what. We don't nickel and dime you on space. We auto-resize things intelligently. And that means we work with all the rest of your blogs and social media in a way that just plain works.

Since every blog is different, we want to make sure we work with yours. If something doesn't look right, email us at help@posterous.com and we'll work with you to fix things fast.

cool! So far i like twitter and flickr autopost since they are for very different purpose. I still have not find the value of having multiple blogs and posting the same content to each blog though.

Hope that you guys would soon be able to add more features to make Posterous a great blogging platform by itself rather than as a middleman for other platforms. :)

PS, this is on top of our support for autoposting to twitter and flickr we rolled out just a week ago. If you want to control WHICH services to autopost to, you can use the appropriate @posterous.com address -- whether it's flickr@posterous.com for flickr, twitter@posterous.com for twitter, tumblr@posterous.com for tumblr, or blog@posterous.com for any of your blog systems (Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad, Movable Type, Livejournal, Xanga, etc.)

Aside from supporting the blog platforms we mention, we also support any blog system that responds to both the MetaWebLog API and Really Simple Discovery API. Just type your blog URL, the username and password, and you're set.

@weekee -- Don't worry. Posterous will be no middleman when we're done with it.

Though, it's never really done, is it? =)

Hi Posterous. This was really *the* feature I was waiting for. It works great on Typepad despite a light picture sizing problem due to my blog template. I'll have to check that later.

WeeKee said...
I am just curious but could anyone explain to me why do you maintain more than one blog with the same content? Or are they different content and you are simply using Posterous email feature to update your blog?

Jul 30, 2008
Martin Menu said...
@weekee / It's not a question of blog, it's a question of audience. Before Posterous, I used to push the content from IRL (where things happen) through my phone (with which I snap stuff) to Flickr (where I store the pictures) to Typepad (where I tell the story going with the picture) to Twitter (where is my community). Same thing with online content, stored in Diigo and pushed via a badge on my blog. As I manage this e-network since years, different audiences were created around Flickr, Typepad, Twitter and Diigo and I spent a lot of time managing these communities.

Posterous changes everything. With a single email - the most easiest tool to use - I'm now able to give to all my readers the same amount of information, wherever they are. And with a smartphone, I even do not need to be in front of a computer to do this job. So, once again, thanks Posterous.

Amazing. This morning I was trying to find a way to autopost on LJ.
I had to upgrade to ads-based account + feedburner + emailing.
And then I log into posterous. And what I saw. New autopost!!
You're fantastic!

You guys are truly amazing. I really hope posterous gets the attention it deserves.

In the meantime, keep up the good work :)

@Michele : Hi, Michele. I'm fully in line with your comment. The fact is WE have the power to give to Posterous the attention it deserves ;-)

Well, I'm missing the more advanced publishing features that Posterous doesn't offer (yet), but I don't understand or like the idea of people posting the exact same content all over the place. Doesn't seem like you need to go down this path to draw a large user base. I'm trusting that Posterous will deliver the advanced features and "win" by offering a better UI for consuming rich content. RSS feed readers sure are convenient, but they don't reward thoughtful site design and are starting to over commoditize content creation (the gap between useful/interesting and wasteful/pointless is getting smaller and smaller). RSS feed readers are like the IBM clones to Posterous' Macs. ;)

Brice said...
@Jon Price. You're right. But this is a great feature if you want to move your blog. I used to blog on LJ. I don't want to ask to my friends to change their bookmarks or RSS. If they want to keep the LJ system to foloow me they can. Also with the diffrent email addresses (eg: post@posterous.com, posterous@posterous.com) I can post where I want. But always from the same app. At last LJ email posting need to switch to ads-based account :p

I hope everyone is enjoying the new autoposting feature. We just added support for combining services in the email address. So twitter+flickr@posterous.com goes to your posterous, twitter, and flickr accounts only. Try it out!

There should be a kind of connection between us. I didn't have the time yet to email you this idea that you already release it. I love posterous.

This is cool.
But how can I assign a category to a post for posting wind wordpress?
Jul 31, 2008
Sachin Agarwal said...
Not yet, but once we implement tagging for posts in Posterous, we'll see if we can push those categories/tags over to the external sites as well.

One problem with the post-to-multiple-blogs feature shows up when there is an error in your post. You have to log in to multiple places to fix it. Being able to automagically alert folks via Twitter is great. Will FB alerts come soon?

Dude I tried sending a mobile photo of a downtown SF protest via SMS to Posterous but it won't work. Am I wrong?
Jul 31, 2008
Garry Tan said...
@Tony

SMS is text only, and MMS isn't supported by our upstream SMS provider at this time. We continue to look for better ways to make this happen though.
Jul 31, 2008
Sachin Agarwal said...
Hey Tony. Right now our SMS support is for text only, not images. Sorry, we should make that more clear.

i absolutely love the autoposting, but i think i may have run into an issue. i have 3 tumblr blogs tied to one login (1 main and the other 2 are under "Groups"). i entered the url of the blog i wanted posterous to autopost to (a non-main) but it posted to my main tumblr. thoughts?

Currently we always post to your main tumblr blog only. I'll add an option to post to blogs under "Groups" tomorrow. Sorry about that :)

@weekee: i guess the idea is this: your not to supposed to upload to multiple blogs (even though you could) but not everyone posts on blogger, some work with typepad or whatever. posterous just opens the doors to all these sites and so attracts a lotta folks. very interesting indeed and far more usefull than swurl although they have a slightly different aim. good luck

How about adding Identi.ca support? If you're not familiar with it, it's an open source-based alternative to Twitter. It speaks Twitter API, so there's no tech issue. I hate the idea of using twitterfeed.com (which has added identica support) to post notices of posterous posts to identica.

@Larry Piper: you could install the Facebook Twitter App and have your tweets auto import as FB status updates. Then your auto-tweeted Posterous updates could be "piped" into Facebook via the Twitter update.

I'm having a little bit of trouble with the autopost. When I embed video, every video I post on my posterous account breaks my wordpress blog. To remedy the situation I have to re-paste the embed code.

I'm thinking it's my wordpress template? This never happens when I post a picture or MP3. Weird.

I'm trying to figure out how to have my
emails posted to my Wordpress blog
http://fadograph.wordpress.com/
but it's very confusing.
I put the URL in but the page was
rejected - there is no clear proceedure
that I can find
Some places are too clear.
But this is a little vague.
If I want the emails posted to a
Wordpress blog do they also go to the
Postrous blog?
A lot of things like this are not too
clear.

It appears you don't have XMLRPC posting enabled for your wordpress blog, which can be enabled in the settings. Once you enable it there, we will be able to post to it. Everything you post with us gets posted to your Posterous blog in addition to the other places. Let me know if you know more info.

Ok guys, I've been loving this feature for a while now, but there's one major thing missing! I have some posts on my posterous that for one reson or another I decided NOT to autpost elsewhere. I've no changed my mind and see no way at all of getting Posterous to squirt that content out!
Oct 16, 2008
Sachin Agarwal said...
@Daniel: If you didn't autopost to your other site initially, there's no way to do that later. Email me personally and I'll take care of it for you.

Just e-mailed you Sachin - many thanks for your help!
Is everyone listening to this?? This is how it's done people! Go Posterous!
Oct 16, 2008
Garry Tan said...
@Daniel

Oh, that's no problem -- just email posterous@posterous.com and you're set. No autopost!
Oct 16, 2008
Daniel Beattie said...
Think you've misunderstood a little Garry!

I know I can control where something is autoposted too - I just wanted to autopost it myself after I'd added it to Posterous.
(Basically, I mailed the content to posterous+twitter@, then have decided afterwards I also wanted it to show up on Tumblr.)
Don't worry though Garry - Sachin helped me out and it's all sorted now! Good Job!

here's an idea though - perhaps a couple of nice little icons when editing a post that show where it was autoposted to? And have it autopost with a checkbox during editing when it wasn't autoposted? I realise you can't 'take back' an autopost once made, so they'd have be one time only checkboxes, y'know!

Quick example: I write 3 months worth of posts and then decide I want them on my LiveJournal. I can't do this. With a couple of checkboxes I can edit each Post in turn and have it squirted over to my LiveJournal account, post-by-post. Does all that make sense?

(And if you're worried about people taking their content with them and buggering off to another provider, well, I wouldn't be worried. It's 2008 after all - content lives everywhere, as you well know here at Posterous!)

@Daniel -- sorry about that, I read your comment wrong. =) Thanks for the feature requests. This stuff makes a ton of sense and we really appreciate the feedback.

Great Service! One thing I am missing: I would like to see a List of Deeplinks to the services that I also posted a Post to from my Posterous-Article-Detail-Page. Like http://tordans.posterous.com/test-posting-via-email-to-twit went to Twitter as well and there should be a link to twitter. And also to Flickr or my Blog (Deeplinks everytime) if I used those services as well.

@Sachin, if I understand your comments on that post right, I can accomplish the above via email (and only email) by sending (approximate guess below) to #twitter.com/user1@myposterous1.posterous.com, #twitter.com/user2@myposterous2.posterous.com?

This is a great feature btw... once again demonstrates the smartness of your approach of not falling prey to (but in fact going in opposite direction to) the "email is dead" meme.

May 08, 2009

Just do
#user1@myposterous1.posterous.com
#user2@myposterous2.posterous.com

no need for the twitter in there. if the usernames match it will post
